SP12GS: Civilian G-10

In the 1990s Spyderco was approached by a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement about making a knife for their undercover agents. These plain-clothes LEOs found themselves in situations where they often could not carry a firearm but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC but as a last resort could use a blade to protect or extricate themselves from a life-threatening situation. This was how the Civilian model came to be.

The Civilian has a patented reverse "S" blade that's intended to be used like an oversized claw. The tip is ground to an ultra-thin profile. Deeply curved and full at the belly, the VG-10 hollow-ground blade excels in slicing and is available fully SpyderEdged. Because of its distinctly specialized features it is not intended or designed for general utility or everyday use. Curved in all the right places for ergonomic use and retention of the knife, the handle is black G-10. Mounted for tip-down carry with a custom curved black clip, the knife rides deeply and unobtrusively in a pocket. One of the most specialized CLIPITS in the Spyderco line-up, the Civilian is available in limited quantities.

The lockback system has been used for many decades. It can usually be found on the knife spine and it provides a strong lockup that will wear well.

I've. owned 5 Civilians
My first was a titanium coated rubber inserted scales version when they were first introduced. I was a very lucky human, truth being I've been a resident of Golden, Co. since 1978. As a toolmaker and machine builder, I was fortunate to be involved in tbe design and build of Sal's first grinder. Have always stayed abreast of the Spyderco line. For the past 25 years I've been doing custom knifesmithing, restorations, and custom modifications. Always inspired by the latest from the " Spyder" guys. I've had a few instances to make my Civilian's presence known. Only once did my assailant try to actually fight, all I'll say is it was over in less than 15 seconds and I walked away. In my opinoin, these knives, regardless of how fancy or not are absolutely the best anti-personnel protection short of something that goes BANG. I did see a demonstration where a Kevlar bullet-proof vest was totally shredded and destroyed in approx. 30 seconds by a military specialist, the Civilian was undamaged. I va e my first one to my brother, I now have 2 with my own custom modifications for a 2 fisted "impression" . R.L.K. Golden, Co.

No one can grab this knife away from your hand
With a straight blade, anyone who wrapped towel around his hand and arm could defend your knife attack or even grab the knife by the blade and deflected the attack. But with this Civilian (wonder why they called it Civilian of all name!?!), any attempt to grab the blade by the attacker will result in losing a finger or two when you yanked the blade back even as an automatic reflex. Not to mention that the sharp "claw" will cut thru the towel and tear away the skin underneath. Very deadly indeed! Let's just say the designer did a fantastic job covering all bases as a powerful defensive weapon.

THE most specialized cqb folder PERIOD
Spyderco makes no apologies or excuses for this knife. It's only purpose in life is to cut flesh. It is NOT an EDC blade in the context of opening mail, cutting tomatoes or cleaning your fingernails. It IS a pure, unadulterated close quarters combat weapon (also good for cutting fresh flowers from the garden like a little sickle, though... 'Honey, where did you put my Civilian...?'). I have carried one for strictly defensive use for years ( I've owned an original Tuffram/Kraton version from new; now a collector's item.). My newer G10 version has been deployed on two occasions. On BOTH occasions, the aggressors stopped IMMEDIATELY upon my deploying the Civilian. It would seem that the criminal element also understands that anyone arming themselves with such an instrument has clear understanding of it's use and is prepared to indulge it's attributes. While certainly NOT an EDC blade in the normal context, for those of us that have a need for such an implement, the Civilian stands alone. I carry one daily for use ONLY as it was intended. My wife carries one daily for the same purpose. Are they used often? Absolutely NOT. Would I want something else when needed for what they were intended? Absolutely NOT. Buy it (and carry it) for what it IS; the single most purposely built folding close quarters extraction knife ever made. Thank you Sal Glesser and Spyderco, Inc, for saving my a__ not once, but twice, with no blood shed.
