Description
CR2280: Keydashi
Columbia River

Over the years, we have produced a number of successful minimal personal fixed blades, each conceived by our favorite knife designers in the quest to make a knife smaller, lighter, and easier to access. Now Brazilian knife designer Flavio Ikoma takes this design challenge to the next step with his new Keydashi™ keychain knife.

Our job was to translate Flavio's custom design into the affordable production version you see here, and we think you will be delighted with the quality and affordability. The knife itself is a full-tang skeletonized piece of high-carbon 1.4116 stainless steel. The 2.0" blade is hollow ground on the right side to a full curved skinner profile with a Razor-Sharp edge and bead-blast finish. This is a versatile shape which is useful for hundreds of daily cutting tasks. Best of all, the knife alone weighs only 0.8 ounce, making it the lightest fixed blade we have ever produced. Flavio's genius comes through in the integrated design of the blade and handle, which allows a secure and comfortable grip that is rarely found in such a small knife. He achieves this through the use of carefully-thought-out details: a deep wrap-around index finger groove, a castellated notch at the thumb, and a slight handle swell with dark green injection-molded Zytel scales.

To provide additional control, a braided nylon fob extends into the hand. Most knives of this type use a locking Kydex or Zytel sheath, but Flavio came up with a stainless steel sheath plate that locks against the flat back side of the blade, safely sealing the blade edge. He used two studs which mate with holes and notches in the blade. To release the sheath plate, simply press the top of the plate with the thumb, and the knife is free to slide off the studs. There are no moving parts, no plastics to wear out with use, so it is simple and safe.

An 8 mm split ring is provided so you can attach the Keydashi to your keychain, or to your favorite neck chain or a nylon paracord (not included.) Oh yes, we forgot to mention the small notch at the base of the finger choil. With the sheath plate locked in place (very important) this notch can be used as a bottle opener when the knife is inverted. It proves once again that really good things come in small packages.

Pros: Materials, Weight, Blade Sharpness, None
Cons: Handle Material, Sheath/Scabbard, Finish
A little sharp
its not that bad of a knife, but as others have stated this knife is small. Yes, the sheath does pop off randomly if you keep it in your pocket and its a little bit of a hassle trying to remove the sheath with one hand but it does come sharp right out of the box and with its light weight and small size its easy to conceal in casual or formal attire

Cute little knife
...all but useless for all the previously stated reasons. I guess you could use it to skin squrils if you were of a mind but not much else. More conversation piece than tool and too dangerous to carry, it lives in the console of my truck.

Great design, poor execution
When I first saw this design I was impressed with it's elegance and immediately ordered two of them. On receiving it I was quite disappointed, not by the design, but by how it has been executed. The blades on both knives, while sharp, bore heavy machining marks on the flat ground side. The plastic used for the handle looks and feels cheap. Worst of all, the sheath-plate is, as the previous reviewer noted, way too loose. So far the knife has come loose while attached to my keys in my pocket, while by itself in my bag, and even when I tried wearing it around my neck. The lightest bump on the handle seems to be enough to open the lockup of between the blade and the sheath plate. This problem is consistent on both knives. Tomorrow I'll take a round file to the blade in order to deepen the locking notch, but I feel CRKT has really messed up an otherwise fine design. On the positive side, the ergonomics are incredible for such a small knife, although those with big hands may find this knife a bit small to use comfortably. The blade cuts well, but has no point to speak of. Edge retention is sadly what I have come to expect from an inexpensive CRKT knife, in other words extremely poor.
