CR7904KN: Hammond Cruiser, Black Blade
Columbia River Knife & Tool
Jim Hammond's Cruiser is a multi-purpose folder that has garnered much praise.

The Cruiser abounds with design subtleties. For example, the handle features a forward slanted friction grooved thumb ramp and a deep finger choil for the index finger, allowing what is known as the "fencer's grip".

To simplify the clean open build, a unique blade stop channel is CNC machined within the blade. This in turn, allows a friction grooved, tapered blade extension (or flipper) which aids opening the Cruiser, and then neatly completes the finger choil. It has been called "the sweetest flipper in the business."

In translating Jim's custom Cruiser into production, Columbia River used their extremely durable InterFrame build with 420J2 stainless steel liners, one locking. The injection molded black textured Zytel scales featuring their Operator's Grip are radiused and contoured with swells to perfectly fit the hand. The long handle, with a pronounced pommel, feels secure and entirely right.

Their work and sport version of the Cruiser use tough 8CR14MoV stainless steel for the clip-point blade. It has a high hollow grind that curves upward near the tip and a long false top edge, making it an exceptionally versatile work tool. Dual thumb studs and Teflon blade bearings at the blade pivot allow smooth one hand opening and closing.

They've also incorporated the patented Lake And Walker Knife Safety (LAWKS®) into the Cruiser, which makes the folder a virtual fixed blade when engaged.

To give the Cruiser maximum utility in a variety of work situations, Columbia River had Jim design a special paddle style pocket clip, which can be attached in four positions: tip up, tip down, left or right. (The Cruiser is not designed for tip-up in-pocket carry.) Two clips and extra torx screws are included. The stainless steel clips are Teflon plated.

Could have been so much more
Got this knife for general everyday outdoor use in the army. Out of the box, the flipper was over tightened and was very difficult to open even after playing with it for half an hour. I do not know why they call this "the sweetest flipper in the business". My Kershaw Nura makes this look like a snail. The sharpness was another issue, it tore the paper rather than cut through it. Frankly I expected more from CRKT on this knife, this is my 4th CRKT knife. Others being the Fossil, tighe ride, nirk tighe and Hootenanny. They are all smooth and razor sharp. The QC on my knife left a lot to be desired... Good points are that this is a solid knife, the thick zytel handles are ergonomic, the blade is a good length and the Lawks lock gives you that extra confidence that the blade won't bite off your fingers with harder use. It comes with a spare pocket clip and can be tip up or tip down, rh or lh carry. So quite versatile in that respect. If you are ok with a lottery for a supposedly fast opener that may or may not be sharp, buy a ticket. CRKT if you are reading this, time to get a new QC manager who can do the job. This would have been a great knife, unfortunately I got one of the bad apples. And international shipping back is more than the knife. Thanks for reading.

Piece of garbage. Broke in a week.
Used for cutting linoleum tile and around the house and will now no longer open or close smoothly. Cheap construction.
