CR9040GNC: Flux-GoNerd Pack-Hex Driver, Flash Drive, Dual Chassis
Columbia River

Columbia River describes this item as follows:

Here at Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) we're inspired by great design. Our I.D. Works products are not tools you will find anywhere else. We're motivated by design that is both inspired and functional, as created 500 years ago by painter, sculptor, architect, and inventor Leonardo da Vinci, who said "observe everything" in nature. We've partnered with the best and brightest designers of today who share this vision of putting functional art in your hand. They are organic and ergonomic shapes, sometimes whimsical, always useful. These unique tools make up our growing I.D. Works line. Put them to use, enjoy them, and always remember what inspires you!

Our Flux modular tool system is another creative design by Launce Barber and Tom Stokes as a part of our I.D. Works tool family. It is a lightweight, high-tech system designed for people with active outdoor lifestyles.

This exciting system was named the 2009 Most Innovative Imported Design at the Blade Show in Atlanta, Georgia, when it was first displayed in May of 2009.

At the core of the Flux system is the lightweight aluminum carabiner chassis which allows tools to be quickly selected, attached, and clipped on clothing and gear. Two chassis are available; one with dual rails which will hold any two Flux tools, and one with a single rail which provides a carabiner for any single Flux tool. Note: Flux carabiners are non-weight-bearing and must not be used as a climbing aid.

We are marketing the Flux system in value clampacks which include two tool components and a double chassis. The GoNerd Pack (Flux Driver and Flux Flash Drive) is aimed at those in the high tech world who might be swapping out a hard drive at one moment, and transferring data at the next.

Flux Driver. This hex driver functions as a standard screwdriver and as a T-handle driver, depending on where the bit extension adapter is placed. It includes three hex bits (one Phillips, two flat) which each have small ball detents to hold them securely in the driver handle until needed. The Driver's utility is enhanced by a small L.E.D. work light near the tip to light the work space.

Flux Flash Drive. Everyone today needs a flash drive to transfer files. Just press the button on the Flash Drive holder, and the 2 GB Micro SD USB Flash Drive flips out for instant use. There is also a small storage compartment in the handle which will hold extra memory cards.

Using the Flux system, the lightweight tools are easy to select and carry for any activity. Just "pick and click" the tool you need.

Not designed for "nerds"
I saw the negative reviews, but am a sucker for gadgets built for "geeks". It bills itself as designed for those who will be " swapping out a hard drive at one moment, and transferring data at the next". First the bit driver. The bits it contains are a #2 Philips, and 2 sizes of straight bits. I have assembled several computers and have never seen a #2 Philips used. They are always the #1 or #0. The bits are not the standard height and they have a spring-loaded ball in them so you can't just store your own in the tool. This means that no, you can't use it to swap out a hard drive. The light does work, and if the tool came with a #0, #1, and a small flat bit, I would actually use it. The flash drive side isn't much more useful. It does carry the drive in a protected manner and it gets points for that. The core of the tool is the 1/2" by 1" micro SD card reader stored in the tool. I have been using this reader for micro SD cards for a while and was excited to see it in a tool. The "extra storage compartment" is just whatever room they had left with a lid on it. It is not sized to a micro SD card in any way. They could have put an insert into the compartment that would have protected the cards better. Micro SD cards are fragile and I don't feel comfortable with them bouncing around in the compartment. The entire tool is 4.25" long and 2" wide. This makes it too big to put in your pocket, and I'm not "nerd enough" to put it on my belt loop. The bottom line is that I don't think they did much research on what someone who works with computers would want. Give me the right size bits, get rid of the carabiners to make the tool smaller, make the actual tools more efficiently to reduce their size, give me something that would protect the micro SD cards, and this would have real potential. I wouldn't use the carabiners for anything and putting a clip on them would make much more sense. If they made a clip for the individual tool, it would be even better. The overall quality looks good, just needs some design tweaking. They are a good brand but I am disappointed in this one.
