Description
ET1005OD: nanoStriker Ultra-Portable Fire Starter
Exotac

OBJECTIVE

We set out to create a product that is high quality, ultra-small in size and completely self-contained. The nanoSTRIKER is the result. Sacrificing neither form nor function, its unique all-in-one design puts all the tools you need to start a fire into one tiny package. At the end of the day, this little tool can be collapsed and returned to key-chain ballast duty.

STRIKER
The striker contains an ultra-sharp tungsten carbide insert for maximum sparks.

HOW TO USE
Ferrocerium fire starters work best with tinder materials that contain large surface areas: dry grasses, wood shavings, cotton balls, dry leaves, clothing lint, etc. Using a tinder material of your choosing, create a loose tinder bundle to catch the sparks from the ferro rod. Wrap the included lanyard around a few fingers to secure the striker handle. Holding the striking tool at an angle, use moderate pressure to quickly scrape the rod. The striker should be carving material off the ferrocerium rod.

Save Your Money!
I bought this product to see if the "Ultra Portable" idea was practical. It's NOT! While the idea is good, and the workmanship, fit and finish, is also good, as are the instructions that are enclosed with the product. However, I found the performance of the product to be extremely lacking! After I had scraped off the initial black finish which must be done on any brand new ferrocerium type rod, I discovered that I had to push very hard with the built-in scraper to get any appreciable sparks! I soon discovered that I had bent the spark rod, during the first few tries! I presume is some form of ferrocerium or similar material and I do not know where or what kind of quality the rods are that exotac used in this product but it is very, very, poor! In addition, the "rod" kept screwing out of the handlewhile in use. Due to it's small size, I found it very frustrating and difficult to use while wearing heavy, cold weather, outdoor gloves and thus it would not be a product to carry alone without any backup, in very cold areas of the country or world! I would have sent this back if I had been able to do so but since I had already used this product I could not expect Knife Center to issue a refund for a used product. For me, it was worth the money to test this "new" product. Unfortunately exotac really needs to go back to the "Drawing Board", revise and rethink this product, if they expect to have a lot of future sales! As for myself, I can NOT recommend this product in it's current design! That said, I think I will stay with my "firesteel" which has stood the test of time in all enviroments! :-) In closing, I would like to make a short comment about Knife Center and the employees I have had dealings with during this, and other purchases I have made from this company. It's not "KC's" fault that this product is faulty! I will say, for the record, that I have had excellent, professional, timely, and courterous service in dealing with the folks at "KC" on this, and other purchases made in the past! Their prices are very competitive and in cases where the same product might be a few dollars cheaper from another company, I am very quick to remember the personalized service I have always received that I do not get with the other, cheaper, companies! Being treated like a fellow human being is something I place a very high value on in the 21st century! Something that seems to be lacking more and more nowadays! I do in fact, plan on making future purchases from them and look forward to working with them on future purchases. Hopefully, this review will help someone from wasting their hard earned money! Respectfully, Coyote [[[[[End of Review]]]]]

Pros: Overall Quality, Ease of Use
Cons: None
Fine tool
I have used many similiar products over the years. Most require the use of an additional tool to make it work, such as a knife or a seperate striker. I appreciate that this tool is self contained and compact. It has worked well for me. I have had the opportunity to use it about a hald dozen times since I purchased it. It has not dissapointed me yet.
