Description
KA5603: Johnson Adventure Parangatang
KA-BAR

This machete is part of the KA-BAR/Johnson Adventure line-up of knives. Built in the parang-style, the blade makes for a great choice for more intense chopping tasks, as the style was originally developed to deal with the woodier vegetation of Southeast Asia.

The 14-1/8" blade is made from 1095 Cro-Van steel with a flat grind and an edge angle of 20 degrees. The blade comes extremely sharp right out of the box... trust me. The Adventuregrip handle is made up of two textured Zytel scales, which provide great grip and hand feel. The length of the handle also allows for a couple of different grips depending on your current task. Weighing in at just less than 21 ounces, the Parangatang feels nicely balanced and should make for a comfortable item to carry and utilize in the field. We really like how the slim blade doesn't compromise mobility with unnecessary broadness. It's made in the USA and comes with a MOLLE compatible sheath. Overall, the KA-BAR Parangatang is an impressively balanced offering. It should make an ideal companion out in the field.

1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel, most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Blade Material, Weight, Finish
Cons: Handle Material, None
Great blade
Out of the box hair shaving sharp. For a blade this long that is really nice. Sheath is not the greatest but is serviceable. Used the knife to clear out vines growing in a tree with leather gloves on. I found the handle material allows the knife to turn in the hand too easily. I have large hands and have no issues holding onto the handle, but the handle is too slick in stock form. Overall this is a great knife for a good price with the usual great Knife Center service.

True Value
It's one of those purchases that rewards you for doing the research watching reviews, and checking multiple websites for deals before impulsively pulling the trigger. I have three sons and am assembling their "every man must own" kits. I own a few other manufactures more "lofty versions" a ultra expensive Winkler 2 parang, and authentic quality made specimen. This purchase made me realize the short comings of the others, it was humbling. This boogers design is SOO properly executed it makes you wonder why evolution works so slow. I actually love the finish as pineapple, cantaloupe, coconut slide right away from the RAZOR sharp leading edge. If they would've put jimping and quality scales on this, it would've been the most in demand product in class. As we speak I am carving new scales from the most highly figured piece of fiddleback maple you've ever seen. I got mine for $62 on a veterans day sale and couldn't been more satisfied...well the sheath I mean is meh? but I feel I am asking too much. Anybody wanna buy a used Winkler 2 parang?

A serious knife...
I was a bit dubious, as I've had some experiences with similar knife profiles of reputable branding; with less than satisfactory results. And as I took hold of the handle, upon its arrival; noticed a pronounced palm swell that didn't quite feel right...blade heavy to the point where it felt as though it wants to roll forward in the hand. This first impression was quickly assuaged, as this blade heavy feel is clearly designed into the execution of the cut. It lends itself to perform like a much larger, full sized machete. 1" green saps taken in one stroke, with no deformation in blade integrity (despite arriving in near razor sharp condition). The edge stayed keen for the remainder of the tree limbing. The knife cleaned easily with its textured k-coat (type) finish; and a half dozen passes on a 'V' sharpener and was in like new condition. Tough to come up with any significant cons, however; maybe the handle material could lend itself to a tackier purchase...but that is seriously nit-picking. This is a fine piece of Made In the USA kit.
