KS1840CKTDAM Black handle and Black and Silver Damascus blade on the full size Shallot
This is No Ordinary Onion.

The shallot onion is one of the world's favorite ways to spice up a cuisine. The Kershaw Shallot, designed by Ken Onion, is destined to spice up your knife collection.

For this one, we've peeled away the layers, leaving nothing but superb form, keen function, stainless-steel handle, and a damascus steel blade. The Shallot features a damascus steel recurve blade. The unique recurve blade design provides for low mass and high performance and is ideal for a wide range of both everyday and extraordinary tasks.

This exceptional blade is partnered with a sleek stainless-steel handle designed for a sure, ergonomic grip. The handle is built of 410 stainless-steel—hardened and tempered to provide maximum strength. For safety, there's a convenient frame lock to secure the blade in position until you choose to releases it.

The Shallot features our SpeedSafe® assisted opening system with ambidextrous index-finger opening. Just pull back on the blade protrusion with the index finger of either the left or right hand. The SpeedSafe® system then moves the blade out of the handle and smoothly and easily into position, ready for use.

The Shallot is a pocket-perfect 4-3/8 inches closed and weighs just 4.2 ounces. It is made in the USA and built to uphold Kershaw's high standards of quality and performance. Like the tasty shallot it's named for, the Kershaw Shallot is sure to make your mouth water for more.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Lock Type, Handle Material, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Ease of Opening, Handle Feel, Weight, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material
Cons: None
I carry this knife every day. I am very pleased with the Damascus steel pattern. After a little practice, opening the knife became second nature. I like that there are no thumb studs to snag on my pocket. Overall weight and balance is excellent. Well made and solid.

Pros: Blade Material, Lock Type, Handle Material, Weight, Pocket Clip, None
Cons: Handle Feel, Ease of Opening
Inconsistent opening action
Kind of small if you have larger hands. The assisted opening feature is very finicky and with a little bit of sawdust, it won't function properly. This knife needs to be babied and isn't very practical. It has good aesthetics if that's what you're looking for and is moderately sharp. It should've been made with a thumbstud.

Cons: None
Aesthetics and functionality combined.
A good and useful size, this knife is slim enough to be very comfortable to carry while still having a nice heft and solid feel in the hand. The pocket clip works well and is aesthetically pleasing, at least to my eye, and the choice of tip up or tip down carry position is great. It is however right hand side only. The assisted opening works well, not as brisk and fast as my Benchmades, but still nice to use. Lock up is completely solid, no blade play at all. The flipper is cool and easy to use and I don't notice the lack of a thumbstud, although I really don't understand why one wasn't fitted. The Damascus steel is the main reason I bought this, the unique and attractive appearance is awesome, particularly well matched to the black handle version. A modicum of care is needed to prevent it rusting, just a light wipe of oil now and then - I use cooking oil as I often use the knife for food, like slicing apples. It came sharp, and seems easier to resharpen to a very sharp edge than medium to high grade stainless blades. The frame lock is pretty standard fare and easy to use. I like the way the pocket clip also serves to provide a stop to prevent the frame lock being pushed too far when unlocking the blade. Overall the quality and design of this knife is really good and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
