SOGSH03CP: SH03 Firestarter / Sharpener
SOG Knives

One of our favorite products of the year, the SOG sharpener is a great example of innovative design in a concise package. With a flat diamond sharpening pad, cylindrical ceramic sharpener (that can be use for serrations) as well as a fire starter (just in case), you have the makings of the perfect companion to any SOG knife or tool.

Pros: None
Cons: Durability, Overall Quality
Shameful - don't buy it
Very nice tool. Compact and useful. But shameful quality. I had a Sog Flash II for more than a years, used it thoroughly and was very happy of it. But just as I opened the package of the firestarter & sharpener SH03, the magnesium stick fall off. Workmanship defect? Perhaps, but I'm leaving for the bush for the summer in two weeks and I don't have the time to ship it back to Amazon and wait for it to return. I'll glue it, but what if it happens to you outside and you just lose the stick while you very need it? SOG definitively lost my confidence. I'm glad I went to Ka-Bar for a fixed blade.

Pocket size but not sure about durability
The is a great pocket size sharpener. It's great for touching up an edge on my normal daily carry EKA knife. I have used it on my kitchen knives and Leatherman tool. I can't tell you how good the fire starter is. The rod for that dropped off the second day I had it in my pocket. I am now worried about the ceramic stone dropping off.

Not very tough
I have not tried sharpening a knife with this yet, but the flint rod fell off upon first test . Doesn't spark that well, so I had to keep striking harder to get a good spark, upon which the glue (the only mechanism holding the flint to the device) gave way and the flint fell off. The diamond sharpener looks a bit thin and cheesey (like adhesive sandpaper), but I haven't tried to use it yet. Considering the price this is a disappointing product, but it is very small and portable - will fit in the pouch on my survival knife's sheath and does work; for emergencies only, not to be relied upon for regular use.
