SPFB02PBB: FB02PBB Bill Moran Fixed Blade - Drop Point

A Spyderco/Bill Moran collaboration started during Bill's retirement yet continues selling strong long after his passing in 2007. Moran defined America's knife industry with his fixed blade designs for use outdoors. Bill's two collaborations with Spyderco are Japanese VG-10, elegantly tapered from spine to edge. Handle and blade carry equal weight and balanced sweet spot where they join at the tang.

Pros: Finish, Blade Sharpness, Overall Quality, Weight, Sheath/Scabbard
Cons: None
Not too big, not too small. Just Right!
Looking for a lightweight EDC, backpacking, or hunting knife? Look no further than the Spyderco Bill Moran! This is one well thought out package and a real tribute to the man who designed it. While it looks a bit unconventional with a slightly upswept spine for a drop point hunter style blade and what looks like an abbreviated handle, beauty is in its feel in the hand. The tear drop shaped handle fills the palm of the hand without extending past it. The rubber inserts are grippy without being too tacky. No pommel to pound with. There is a nice finger choil which allows you to choke up on the knife and use your index finger along the spine for fine work. It's just big enough to avoid cutting yourself if you're careful but I wish it were rounded off a bit instead of square. It's not a full tang knife so don't plan on batoning it through many logs but the razor sharp full flat grind makes it an awesome slicer and no one should be planning on doing much chopping with a 3 oz knife, anyway. So far I've used mine for food prep, while backpacking, and doing everyday cutting tasks and it's done beautifully. Is VG-10 the latest and greatest super steel? No, but it gets the job done, it's corrosion resistant, relatively easy to sharpen, and it's affordable. The partial stick tang isn't popular with the built like a tank crowd but it keeps the weight down which makes it so nice as an EDC or backpacking knife. While I know the Spyderco hole is a trademark, I don't like the fact food and blood could get trapped in it for hygiene purposes. The sheath is great. Light, super retention, and the blade locks I'm with a positive snap. One minor gripe on a blacked out knife and sheath are the two stainless screws holding on the belt loop. This is the only bit of lack of attention to detail on the whole package. Pros: Overall compact length and low weight; comes with a great sheath; designed by a legend Cons: Not made in the USA; not for batoning or pounding stakes. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Blade Material, Sheath/Scabbard, Handle Material, Weight, Overall Quality, Blade Sharpness
Cons: None
Excellent package-excellent price
Excellent kife and sheath that fits perfectly. The sheath is high quality with multiple carry configurations. Blade is very sharp out of the box with no knicks or quality issues. RE: the comment that this knife handle is small: I have large hands/fingers but choked up on the knife, putting my trigger finger in the cut-out index on the blade. At first was concerned about using knife with my finger right next to the very sharp blades edge, but for me, it feels very solid. Users with medium and especially small hands should fit the handle without having to utilize the cut-out index on the blade. Additionally, the knife has a very light feel to it, but both the sheath and knife are rock solid and high quality. Well worth the sale price.

I also purchase the Bowie blade version of this series. Spyderco makes excellent products. I liked the balance and feel of the knife. With all of the mechanical and metalurgical pluses, one of the reasons I purchased it is,it looks good.
