There Is No Rust For The Weary

A Major in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division contacted Spyderco sourcing a better knife for their Jumpmasters. More than a few of their crew already carry Spydercos and were familiar with our serrations and manufacturing quality standards.

When jumping out of a plane, airborne servicemen are attached to a static line, jumping one per second with a Jumpmaster insuring they get out and are clear of the plane and next jumper. If someone doesn't clear because of equipment failure or just poor luck, the Jumpmaster is ready with a reliable cutting tool. Once clear of the aircraft jumpers still need a reliable and quick-cutting blade in case they need to cut themselves free.

The Army's 82nd Airborne set out what they wanted in a knife and Spyderco complied by making the Spyderco Jumpmaster fixed blade. Their wish list included a rust-proof hollow-ground H-1 blade with a Sheepfoot (Rescue) profile. The blade comes fully serrated to quickly cut through ropes, lines, webbing or fabric. To keep the knife firmly in hand yet light and easily maneuverable, the handle is made of fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) that is Bi-Directionally Textured® for a secure grip. The tang of the blade is skeletonized reducing the weight even more.

The knife carries solidly in an injection molded polymer sheath that's curved, designed to carry against the body or calf without flaring or hard spots. Nylon straps on the sheath offer multiple attachment options and a lanyard hole in both the blade and handle are for additional back-up attachment.

Pros: Blade Material, Sheath/Scabbard, Handle Material, Weight, Overall Quality, Blade Sharpness
Cons: None
"All okay Jumpmaster!"
Blade is great for cutting equipment and static lines. Not only for towed parachutists but in the event the parachute deployment bag is endangering the aircraft; one swoosh of the blade and bags away! Would be nice if the tang and handle had a hole for a lanyard but that does not diminish the utility of this blade. "All the way!"

Excellent Knife Terrible Sheath
This is a not a do all knife. This is a knife for cutting things. Rope, plastics, paper, clothing and just about anything not concrete are all fair game for this knife. Don't expect to stab or pry with this knife. That being said, this knife is VERY good at what it does. The blade arrived sharp and clean. Mine was a little dinged up on the grip but I don't buy a knife for the grip. The only thing I'd change to the knife would maybe add a glass breaker on the end. But I'm pretty much nitpicking. Unfortunately, the sheath that comes with this knife is laughably bad. The plastic feels flimsy and I don't know why they didn't just throw in a Kydex sheath anyway. The straps are okay for the sheath I guess... The BIG problem with the sheath is it will scratch your blade whenever you retrieve it. This isn't a "break it in" thing either. The FIRST time I took the knife out of the sheath it put a line diagonally down the blade. These lines also appear on both sides. Having used/owned this knife for a few weeks now, it pretty much looks like hell. I don't know if I got a bad sheath or what. Spyderco knows this knife is made of a soft metal so if this is the way the sheath is supposed to be, I'm very disappointed. It's an excellent knife but if you get it you need to either find a new sheath immediately, or Cerakote the blade before ever putting it in the sheath. I'm hoping Cerakote will fill the lines in the blade since it looks like I dragged it from the back of a car. Knife still works fine though. If the sheath didn't completely blow I'd give a full 5 stars. It probably deserves 5 anyway since there's absolutely nothing wrong with the knife. That's the review, hope it helps.
