150 Million Year Old Dinosaur Bone Folding Knife 2-1/4" Damascus Blade - XTDDINO60
XTDDINO60: 150 Million Year Old Dinosaur Bone Folding Knife
Santa Fe Stoneworks describes this item as follows:
The gemstone in this knife handle is actually a section of petrified bone from a sauropod - one that lived 150 million years ago. The sauropods were very large four-legged creature with elephant-sized feet and long necks and tails. Known to have been amphibious, these herbivores roamed the savanas, swamps and marshes of the Mesozoic Southwest in search of succulent grasses and plants at the height of the Age of Dinosaurs.
Today we find only the occasional remains of these large creatures. Fortunately for us, some of their bones were rapidly covered by mud and sand after death, causing them to be transformed into rock. Bone marrow in cell cavities was replaced by fine particles in the covering sediment, which then agatized to form the colors and patterns you see in the handle material.
This particular fossil was found in the Shinarump member of the Chinle Formation in the Four Corners area of northwestern New Mexico. The age of the bone was determined by reference to the well-defined strata in which it was found.
We only have a limited amount of this petrified bone, and little prospect of securing any more. Our specimen is neither valuable nor unique, nor is its ornamental use considered a loss to the scientific community - there are plenty of sauropod bone fragments available for study. Please accept its use as handle material in the spirit that we offer it: as a tangible reminder of the mysterious animals that ruled the world at the dawn of time.
Damascus steel is characterized by its strength, edge hold ability, and its dramatic appearance. The damascus steel used in our knives comes from Japan and is called "Sanmai Damascus" or Sandwich Damascus. There is a core of VG-10 "Super Steel" with 16 layers of SUS410 high carbon stainless steel on each side to produce a rust free Damascus look blade.
