Description
CS49KS: Steel Tiger
Cold Steel

Cold Steel has always contended that the Karambit is a specialized style of knife with unique but limited uses. It is also, however, quite popular. So, in response to the many requests from our customers, and with the help of custom knife maker, Steven Likarich, we proudly introduce the Steel Tiger®, our interpretation of this ancient Indonesian knife.

It possesses all the best features of the classic Karambit and unites them with modern styling and materials, and, best of all; we’ve kept it very affordable.

The broadly curved AUS 8A stainless blade is beautifully polished, taper ground, and vacuum heat-treated and sub zero quenched, for maximum strength, cutting power and edge retention.

But it’s the grip that really distinguishes it from the competition. Designed for comfort, strength and ease of use, it features a tough Grivory® core that encapsulates the tang, emerging as the bolster/thumbshelf and distinctive finger ring. This core is then overmolded with Kraton®, which yields more to hand pressure than Grivory, and, in turn, creates a superb, non-slip grip.

For safety, convenience and quick access, the Steel Tiger® comes with a sturdy Secure-Ex® sheath that you can lash to your gear or retain on your person via the removable boot/belt clip.

Pros: Sheath/Scabbard, Blade Material, Blade Sharpness, None
Cons: Weight, Handle Material, Finish
Not my first recommendation as a go-to combat knife but makes for a fairly effective backup
I tend to be a hard sale when it comes to combat knives. That said, this is a fairly impressive piece, and its appropriately priced here. The karambit is a fairly specialized design, and many current designs tend to be tactically flawed for various reasons, understandable though they may be. This particular karambit isn't quite as ergonomic as it looks, the tang is approximately 50mm too thin to give you a particularly beefy grip, or to make the blade very maneuverable when switching grips on the fly. The spine of the blade is unsharpened, which as I understand was intended so as to make the knife legal to carry in most US states. This unfortunately limits the Karambits intended ability as a combat tool, though depending on your needs, it can be overlooked as a minor detail. The mirror finish is overly ostentatious in my opinion, and a fine beadblast or non-reflective coating would have served much better for this particular style of combat knife. The overall design is very sturdy, the steel used is fairly high quality tool steel, and the design of the knife as a whole is fairly sound. This wouldn't be my first recommendation as a go-to combat knife, but it makes for a fairly effective backup or emergency "last ditch" defensive weapon.

Cons: None
Just had the tiger delivered, it's exactly what it should be, and so much more. Razor sharp. When it sits in your hand, makes you feel predatory, like it's impatiently waiting to disembowel something, puts a grin on my face every time I draw it Knife center is awesome, staff is happy, helpful, and my orders come correct and fast. Love this site!!
