MICROTECH MUDT

FIRST IMPRESSION

By Dexter Ewing, KnifeCenter Product Reviewer

MicroTech’s signature automatic knife, the LUDT, has proven itself to be a popular design in the automatic market.  The no-nonsense design coupled with MicroTech’s commitment to superb machining standard, is what earned this knife a cult following.  There were colored handled LUDTs and wild looking splash finishes.  There was even a diminutive Mini UDT, same design as the LUDT but with a 2 1/4 inch long blade.

Now, enter the MUDT, the medium sized rendition of the popular MicroTech LUDT design.  Though the knife is relatively new, there are already several different versions of the knife on the market already.  First, there was the Tactical MUDT, made in a limited edition of 100, which featured an all black look.  From the blade to the firing button, screws, and pocket clip, it was a total “black out”.  And how can any MicroTech fan not look at a Walter Brend hand ground MUDT and just drool, with its mirror polished bevels?  Then there are the standard models –available in a black titanium nitride coating (TiN) or a silvery chromium nitride coating (CrN).  While the LUDT was a great knife in that it was large enough to tackle a wide variety of cutting tasks, some may have found it a bit too large for daily carry.  This is one area where the MUDT really shines.  At about 3 ? inches closed, this knife is very comfortable to tote around daily and its 6 ½ inch overall length keeps the MUDT at a good size to tackle some cutting tasks like opening mail and packages.

In action, the MUDT is pretty quick.  You might notice that right out of the box the action has somewhat of a gritty feel.  All MicroTechs have this feel initially, probably due to the fact their knives use the machined-in “washers” that contact the blade.  But after a while of playing with it and applying generous amounts of lube to the pivot area, the surfaces of those “washers” will become burnished and you’ll find the action to slicken up a bit.  To fire the MUDT, the button really needs to be pressed.  Those of you familiar with automatics will immediately note that this is a safety feature to prevent accidental opening while the knife is resting in the pocket.  A tapered plug locking mechanism securely holds the blade locked in place in either the open or closed position.

Materials used to make the MUDT are about the same as with any other MicroTech knife.  Each knife blends T6 6061 hard coat anodized aluminum handles with textured rubber inlay and a 154CM stainless blade.  The overall machining quality is excellent per MicroTech.  A pocket clip is attached to the lanyard end of the handle, which permits the user to clip the knife to the pocket for ease of carry.  I’ve discovered the MUDT to ride comfortably when clipped to the little change pocket of jeans.  Each knife is supplied with a Cordura nylon sheath, should the buyer favor this mode of carry.

The MUDT is perfect for uses as a small utility knife.  Opening mail, all sorts of packages, cleaning underneath fingernails, and anywhere else a small blade like this would be useful.  With its heritage tying in with the very famous LUDT, the MUDT is sure to be another great seller for MicroTech.  For those of you who are legally able to carry automatics and like smaller blades, put the MUDT at the top of your list.  You’ll be pleased with this one here!
