SWISS TECH MICROTECHNICIAN

By Dexter Ewing, Knife Collector and Enthusiast

With the Swiss Tech Microtechnician, you can have a multi-function tool (pliers, 2 screwdrivers, wire cutter, and shear) dangling from your keyring. An increasingly competitive segment of the knife market is the pliers knife, and the Swiss Tech is a variation of that theme. Not much longer in length when unfolded than a pair of tweezers, it makes for a great tool to pull you through some of those little unexpected situations that seem to pop up in your daily life.

LOCKS ONTO YOUR KEYRING

The quality and craftsmanship of the Swiss Tech is excellent. Both halves of the tool are well machined, with no lateral play in the main pivot. The Phillips and flathead screwdrivers double as the pliers' handles. A unique feature of this little tool is that the screwdriver handles fold up, locking the pliers jaws shut around your keyring. No need to worry about accidental loss! In spite of this convenience, the Swiss Tech will add a little bit of weight to the keyring. You definitely will feel its presence in your pocket, but there are no sharp edges to rip through the pocket material.

USING THE SWISS TECH

Initially, you will discover the small pivots on the handles to be a bit too tight to comfortably manipulate. As time goes on they will loosen a little, but not to the point where they are floppy. With a tool this small, using it could take some getting used to. I found that the best way to use the pliers is by gripping one handle with your thumb and index finger, and the other with your middle and ring fingers. By moving the latter two fingers, you can control the pliers quite comfortably.

ANALYSIS

My only two complaints about the Swiss Tech are with the wire cutters and shear. Take into consideration that the Swiss Tech was not designed as a primary tool, but rather one to have in those "just-in-case" scenarios. Cutting small diameter wire is a bit of a hassle since the tool is so small. With the handles being as short as they are, not much leverage is provided. The user has to make up for it in hand strength. But then again, if you don't have a pair of wire cutters to make a necessary repair, hey, it's better than nothing at all! The shears are integrated into the handles, located just behind the wire cutter. Keep in mind that the shears are not sharp at all, and the small size limits what and how think material can be cut. If you need to cut something, I'd rather root around for a pair of scissors.

CONCLUSION

All in all, the Swiss Tech Microtechnician will definitely please those who are into handy little gadgets of this type. With the ability to attach itself to your keyring, you now have no excuse not to be prepared for simple emergency repairs.
