Al Mar Knives

The SERE 2000 is world renowned as one of the strongest tactical folders in existence. Originally designed by Al Mar and Colonel Nick Rowe in the early 1980’s for the U.S. Army’s SERE school, today’s updated models are stronger, lighter and the most precise versions ever made.

The SERE 2000 features pillar construction, flow through design and a top-mounted reversible Deep Pocket Clip for discrete carry. G10 handles provide plenty of traction with a flared front end ideal for combat grips and thrusting. Dual thumbstuds open the blade easily and a solid liner lock keeps it open. The VG10 drop point blade is useful for more than just combat with a flat grind for slicing efficiency and a deep swedge to aid in piercing, delivering the kind of performance you need in the real world.

Since 1979, AL MAR Knives has been committed to making unique designs at quality levels that rival custom, hand-made knives. Today, each knife crafted by AL MAR is hand-finished and hand-sharpened by craftsmen dedicated to creating the very best possible product.

Poor customer service
The screws on the pocket clip loosened on my SERE 2000, one fell out and was lost. (there was no thread locker compound on them). I called Al Mar Knives for a replacement screw and got the run around. Maybe this was in anticipation of the company being sold, which it subsequently was, I don't know. Nice knife, crappy service.

Pros: None
Cons: Blade Sharpness
Excellent knife, poor customer service
I love this knife. Fit and finish are beyond compare, nobody else really comes close. Cons are the edge of the steel liner is sharp against your hand, I wish they could have beveled or sanded it down some. I took a file to the liner around the top of the handle, where the thumb sometimes rests. The big con (and why I have stopped recommending this knife, or any Al Mar product) is their lack of customer service. Once a year I send in all my knifes for sharpening. I send out my Benchmades, my Zero Tolerance and Kershaws, my Bucks and I take my SpyderCo's in to be sharpened since I live in Colorado. SpyderCo, Benchmade and ZT/Kershaw are all excellent. But with Al Mar, I can't even get them to return my emails, let alone sharpen my knife. I've heard they charge $15 to do it, too, unlike the other companies that do it for free and ship it back to you on their dime. Will I ever buy another Al Mar? No Way!

Pros: Pocket Clip, Overall Quality, Handle Feel, Weight, Handle Material, None
Cons: Ease of Opening
This is an excellent knife. The fit and finish is perfect in every way. This is an extremely well made knife! If you like a lighter EDC then their Eagle is great, but the SERE 2000 allows for deep pocket carry, which the Eagle does not. The handle design is study and grippy and your hands won't slip onto the blade even if your hands are wet and it's a tough "thing" you are stabbing. Maybe slightly stiff to open but not too bad. Absolutely no play in the blade. If you want an excellent knife that is cheaper consider the Cold Steel Recon, the 4" one, but if you want to step up a bit, the SERE 2000 is so great.
