Bark River Knives
Bark River specializes in cutting tools for outdoorsmen and others who need real performance in the field. They use a blend of traditional/contemporary designs and styles to get a product that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ultra-functional.

The Bark River Mini-Rogue is a Scaled down version of the Rogue Bowie. That particular model was Bark River's version of the first real Bowie Knives made in this country. The period was 1827 and the place was Natchez, Mississippi. The very time and place that Jim Bowie came into world prominence for his rough fight on the Vidalia Sandbar. The Sandbar was just south of Natchez, Mississippi and local blacksmiths began to answer the request for "A Knife Like Bowie's." The Rogue Bowie was done in the early Natchez style and Bark River's was sized from a vintage example in the Arkansas State Museum that has been credited to early Bowie maker, James Black. This smaller companion blade is just as capable yet much more easily carried. It comes in A-2, a hearty, resilient and very durable tool steel that is sure to last you a lifetime and is supplied with a leather Mountain Man Sheath.

A mix of old and new
I had one of these from the first production run, years ago. It held an edge for months as long as I did not whack it in dry wood or bones. This knife was my first experience with A2. I was surprised that the blade tended to chip rather than to roll. Now, don't worry: this knife is very tough. Chipping won't be an issue unless you act like a Cold Steel employee on a destruction video. Of course, the main issue with this knife is that there is no guard (and why I rated it at four stars), which was a feature of the original knife. I put a screw into the bolster to keep my hand from slipping onto the blade. The other thing I did was to checker the four edges of the handle. Both of these helped a great deal, but ruined the value of the knife. In all, it is was worth the purchase. I love customizing my knives, so the lost value meant nothing to me. It is an extremely ergonomical handle, and it is one of the two most comfortable knives I have ever owned. It is a real hoss, especially for butchering large game and dealing with green wood. Although A2 holds an exceptional edge, I find in a large blade, its schedule of usability is more on par with a knife made in 1930, though it holds an edge far, far longer.
