BO02MAG2019: Magnum Collection 2019
Magnum by Boker
Gary Groves from West Virginia is a real old school knifemaker. As a boy, he spent a lot of time outdoors, and his passion for knives was initiated by a gift from his father — a handmade knife made out of an old saw blade. After his deployment in Vietnam, he started working in the coal mines in West Virginia, and with the intense work he had with his profession, his knife making passion had to take a back seat. A severe accident in the coal mine in 2002 changed his life dramatically, leaving him disabled and unable to work. After a short period of orientation, he began to delve deeper into knife making.

In 2007, he met his mentor, Leon Peal, who supported Gary significantly in his efforts, and since then, Gary is a well-established member of the knifemaker community. As a member of the American Knifemakers' Guild, his knives can be seen in various knife magazines, and his preference for classical Bowies and fighters can be clearly recognized in the Magnum Collection 2019.

The bellied blade with the straight spine grants a very dynamic appearance, and the slightly angled handle with the massive guard gives a very fast action to this large knife. The swedge of the blade not only reduces the overall weight and gives a great balance, but also underlines the spectacular design. The handle is made out of canvas Micarta, in deep green and burgundy red, with polished steel rings in between.

This exceptional piece is no doubt influenced by traditional patterns, but also finds, with the specific signature lines from Gary Groves, its very special expression — and impresses with the outstanding overall result. The blade is crafted of 440C, with a mirror polish finish, which is also applied on the handguard. The Magnum Collection 2019 is strictly limited to 1,999 pieces worldwide. It comes with a high-quality leather sheath, and in an exclusive collector's box with a certificate of authenticity.

440C Stainless Steel

While it was still a high-end steel several decades ago, 440C is a very decent middle-grade steel today. Many users still see it as the perfect "magical trifecta" of edge retention, corrosion resistance and easy sharpening. It is still the first choice for Boker Plus and for many models from the Solingen factory.

The Quality & Value Far Exceeds the Price
The picture here just doesn’t do this blade justice. This Bӧker Magnum 2019 Collection Fixed Blade is truly impressive. The first thing that catches your eye is the mass and depth of the blade. It is 1 5/8” deep from spine to belly at its apex. The beautiful polish job on the blade is something you don’t see much anymore on production knives, except for Bӧker. It takes man hours to produce a high polish like this on a blade, and if the consumer will accept lesser finishes (acid etched, stone washed, blasted, etc.), most manufacturers just aren’t going to spend the time and expense. Gary Groves’s design has beautiful lines and flow. The fit and finish are outstanding. The whole presentation here is stunning from the get-go, with the wooden presentation box, the Bӧker Magnum 2019 Collection polishing cloth, and certificate of authenticity. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Knife is well balanced. Love the long swedged spine; and more belly on this blade than a “happy fat man,” garden Buddha. The curved handle is comfortable and agile in hand. Add some grip to the handle and it would make a fine hog hunting knife. Sheath is adequate, but nothing that is going to stand up to hard use. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I should keep quiet about these Bӧker Yearly Collection Fixed Blades. With only 2000 produced each year they can’t help but appreciate in value, and one of these years I’m going to come shopping for one and find them sold out. This is a great chance to own a blade designed by a custom knife maker that most of us could not usually afford. This would easily be a $400+ fixed blade in some other knife manufacturer’s catalog. So, let’s just keep this a secret among our KnifeCenter family, eh?
