CISH1010: Godfred Viking Sword

CAS Hanwei

Named for the feared 8th Century Viking Raider, the Godfred Sword is built around a beautifully patterned folded steel blade to replicate the pre-9th Century originals. The interwoven leather grip, complemented by a Damascus guard and pommel, is matched by the leather-covered wood scabbard with bronze detailing and integral belt hooks. Superbly balanced, due to the deeply fullered distal tapered blade profile, the Godfred is a true tribute to the legendary Norse smiths.

An amazing sword that is so well built!
I saw this sword at a local sword dealer back in 1997 and I was in love. I lusted after that sword like nothing else I had ever seen. It was way out of my price range back then, but several years later I was able to obtain one. It is just such a well balanced and great feeling weapon that you really do have to hold it to believe it. Every part of it is superbly crafted and it was definitely the crown jewel of my collection at the time. It never gets mentioned in listings like this, but this was the hero sword in the Jim Caviezel movie Outlander many years ago. It made me smile to see my sword in the movie. I do love movie swords, but this is one I bought long before that film. However, if I didn't already have it, then I would definitely want it after seeing that. I had reasons that I loved this sword beyond the craftsmanship and a few years after I bought it I found someone who could laser engrave something on it that made it really special to me. Then some years later I made a trade with a neighbor who was a wood craftsman and he made me a special stand for it that enabled me to show off the blade and scabbard together. Now it is able to be displayed in all its glory and is the most commented on piece in my collection of a dozen or so very fine swords. I don't collect Chinese wall hangers. My swords are functional and ready for use. This one, however, while being very functional, is going to remain on display. It is gorgeous and deadly and I love it. My very best swords are from Paul Chen, so you should have no hesitation to buy this sword should it fit in your budget. You'll never find someone willing to part with it used, so unless you get really lucky and somebody sells it in your local classifieds without knowing anything about it, expect to pay good money for this. KnifeCenter has the best price I've seen online for this sword, so you better buy it here while they have them. It sells for between $800 and $1000 everywhere else, so don't expect to find this on sale for $200 bucks somewhere. It won't happen. The only con I will give it is that after owning it for nearly 20 years some of the rivets are a little loose on the scabbard. Nothing a little glue didn't sort out, but that is honestly the only con. Every bit of this sword and scabbard are so well made that I have no doubt I could take this into battle with confidence that it wouldn't lose any function even if a decorative rivet did fall out along the way.If you want the best viking sword you can find, then this is the sword you are looking for. It is amazing!

Pros: Materials, Sheath/Scabbard, Finish
Cons: None
I've had one of these on display for years... It was the first of what turned out to be an expensive collecting hobby. It still gets many comments... It's just beautifully appointed. I would recommend it as more of a display piece than a practical fighter, though. I have others that I do practical cutting drills with, and I'm not sure the Godfred would withstand harsh treatment long term. The Damascus treatment of the hilt and the folded steel blade are just gorgeous though and very period-accurate for about the 11th or 12th centuries.

Husband loves it!
My husband loves this sword! It is on display for him to show to his friends, and he likes to take it down on occasion to carry along while travelling. It would make a great gift!
