CISH2132: Bird Dog Sword Cane

CAS Hanwei

The CAS Hanwei Bird Dog Sword Cane is beautifully crafted by the Paul Chen Forge to a quality standard of sword canes costing much more. The rosewood shaft makes for a classic appearance. The head of the cane is investment cast in stainless steel, to preserve its finish indefinitely. The 25.5" carbon steel blade is fully tempered and a latch secures the sword firmly in the scabbard section.

Pros: Usable, Handle Material, Blade Material, Overall Quality, None
Cons: Sheath/Scabbard, Finish
A very decent choice in a swordcane.
This cane holds up well as a support, but for best results you'll need to get a good rubber tip for it first. This particular model takes a 1/2 inch tip. Styling is good, you don't see a nice wood finish on "gadget canes" often. Mostly black and in some synthetic material is what you get nowadays and often not as well put together. The dog head, while not my first choice for a handle, is solid and comfortable in the hand. It also provides a balance point close to the hand for when the blade is drawn. The catch holds well and without the need for a telltale button. A solid tug and it's drawn. The blade is well made and longer than most modern made sword canes coming in at just over 25 inch as opposed to 12-17. It's point is sharp, but the sides are unsharpened. As I understand it, rapier style blades weren't sharp on the edges, but you can fix that easily should you want it to be. My only gripe about the blade is it isn't brought up to as nice a polish as Hanwei's other offerings in steel. Lastly, where the blade enters the sheath, the opening has burrs where it was cut. A small file and a few mins of work will remedy that. Overall, good value in quality for the price.
