CR7730: 7730 Offbeat, Designed by Pat Crawford

A far cry from familiar.

During his impressively long career, designer Pat Crawford has earned himself a handful of illustrious awards. And throughout it all, one unique knife has stood the test of time: the Offbeat. Originally designed in 1979, Pat has honed and refined this out-of-the-ordinary pocket knife to perfection. This is ingenuity at its finest.

For anyone that considers themselves a part of the knife community, Pat Crawford is a household name. From his shop in West Memphis, Arkansas, he's turned out customs that have set a seriously high precedent. That's not to mention that they're consistently some of their most popular at CRKT. Now, he's back at it with a design from the archives: the Offbeat.

Before the CNC machine revolutionized our industry, Pat spent an inordinate amount of time cutting handles out of titanium and fitting folders together by hand. So, to expedite the process, he simplified his design. Inspired by a Boy Scout wire handle folder, he invented the Crawford Lockback—an innovation that has proven its worth and is the defining characteristic of the incredibly unique Offbeat.

The handle is made of stainless steel and features a long, slender cutout along the back with a solid thumb stud at its terminus. As the blade is deployed with its own ambidextrous thumb stud, the cutout slides around the butt end of the blade until it reaches a notch along the backside. Then, the cutout seats snugly into place, effectively locking the blade in the open position. In this position, the harder you grip the handles, the more secure it becomes.

To disengage the Crawford Lockback and close the knife, push up on the thumb stud near the pivot area of the blade and fold it closed—a truly 'offbeat' way to unlock a folder. The classic drop point blade features a satin finish, matching the handles, and making for one sleek, sender everyday carry.

Conventional? Nope. Utilitarian? All the way.

Pros: Handle Feel, Weight, Blade Sharpness, None
Cons: Lock Ease of Use, Ease of Opening, Lock Type
Nearly impossible to close, lock doesn’t line up properly.
I like one-hand opening knives. Manual, assisted or otherwise. I like being able to operate a knife with one hand, from deployment to putting it away, back into my pocket. I have faced difficult locking mechanisms in the past. Even ones far more “gimmicky” than the lock here. This knife is awkward to open, requires incredible strength and dexterity with the thumb to release the lock, and the lock doesn’t return to its natural resting place. It ends up on the side of the butt end of blade, needing to be tweaked back into place. That is, if you don’t want to risk losing your fingertips. The only way to close this blade, as per the explicit instructions about the mechanics, is to risk closing the blade on your fingertips. I have sat here trying multiple ways of using this blade, simply locking and unlocking, repeatedly. I still can’t safely use this knife with one hand. A+ for looking cool and having a “different” type of lock. F- for usability. F- for safetyIf someone knows any kind of magic needed to work this beyond the knowledge of an average collector, please let me know.

CRKT Crawford Offbeat
I have been buying and collecting custom Crawford knives for thirty years. My favorites are the Frame Lock folders. Pat doesn’t make knives anymore, his son doesn’t seem to make the Frame Locks. They are getting harder and harder to find on the secondary market. A few past attempts to produce this design in factories resulted in clumsy poorly executed designs. The CRKT Offbeat is amazing! Although the handle is not one solid piece but rather separate pieces joined together, the seams are hard to find. The net result is a perfectly formed and functional knife. Beautiful, opens closes and locks seamlessly. The small price paid for such a wonderful knife is unbelievable. This knife now brings a unique and wonderful knife design to all who might wish to own and use it. Highly recommended.

Excellent Knife
Excellent version of the Crawford design; the quality is comparable to my A.G. Russell! Very tight lock up & smooth opening/closing. I just got it, I haven't had a chance to put it to use yet, but at first glance it looks like a winner.
