Beware: Awesome Knife Terrible Sheath
The knife itself is sharp and beautifully made. Love the Kraton handle and the black finish.... so it was terrible when I very stupidly (?) actually dared to put the knife in the factory sheath. I was rewarded with marks on the blade and handle. Can't believe I had such a wonderfully crafted knife in my hands only to have the sheath destroy it. I bought this as a addition to my collection now its marked from ONE placement in the sheath. Sort of surprised at the poor quality of the sheath; however this is the 2nd Cold Steel knife I have purchased that had a bad sheath. The other was the Single edged Cold steel T handle knife. That one was usable but the one on the recon isn't. Not only did it mark my blade but the design is terrible anyway with a backwards thumb snap facing the WRONG way to unsnap with your thumb. I wish KnifeCenter would have warned about this being a issue or a factory 2nd or something. I'm keeping the knife but ordering a replacement sheath online from another custom shop.

The Japanese made Recon Tanto VG-1
This knife is a utility blade with no frills and provides a different profile than other Cold Steel Tanto models. The blade is more compact than The Leather Neck Tanto yet just as sharp and strong. The handle’s smaller diameter provides a comfortable and solid grip without using a full hilt. The difference of the grind shows more straight lines. The cost is reduced by using a blade coating that will wear but has no effect to the usefulness of the knife. VG-1 steel is a proven performer. Cold Steel Tanto blades are beefy looking blades compared to traditional Japanese designs. The Tanto blade is supersized a full 5mm thick. A lanyard hole is provided in the end of the handle for those who desire to add one. This knife is a bargain and outperforms knives costing three times its price.

Good blade
Came very sharp just like all Cold Steel knives I've ever purchased. Sturdy and we'll made. No, I haven't torture tested it... Sheath is good for what you pay for. There are numerous aftermarket sheaths for this knife if you want to go that route. Knife Center's service was excellent as usual.
