CS36MC: 36MC Drop Forged Survivalist
Cold Steel
While on a research trip in Argentina, Cold Steel President Lynn C Thompson had the pleasure of using a solid steel hunting knife by French knifemaker Michel Achez.

He was incredibly impressed by Monsieur Achez's knife, which was both simple in design and astonishingly functional.

Inspired by Michel's work (and with his blessing), Lynn began exploring how to bring this classic hunter to a larger audience and also expand the design into other platforms.

The Drop Forged Survivalist is expertly heat treated and drop forged from 52100 high carbon steel with a Rockwell hardness of 58-59 for superior toughness. Its continuously curved, super-wide clip point blade is both sharp and strong, designed to put in great work in even the most demanding conditions.

With no handle to break or no superfluous parts to rot, crack or get damaged in the field, the Drop Forged Survivalist is a no-nonsense hard-working outdoor/hunting knife and survival tool.

Its ergonomic handle, with its integral finger guard deep comfortable trough and lanyard hole offers a very secure and comfortable grip even when wearing thick, heavy workman's gloves.

Supplied with a durable Secure-Ex sheath, the Drop Forged Survivalist is sure to be appreciated and valued by those who will marvel at its performance and value for the money.

Pros: Materials, Blade Sharpness, Blade Material, Overall Quality, Sheath/Scabbard, None
Cons: Weight, Finish
Bulletproof value
Unstoppable knife in every way. One-piece forging makes any discussion about the tang superfluous. The tradeoff is that it's a weighty brute but not nearly the hassle of a machete and more versatile than a hatchet. In various reviews, here and elsewhere, there is little said about the finish and much incorrect speculation even among owners. The finish is in 2 layers: a black protective base coat and a silver/bronze metallic color-coat over that to simulate the appearance of a clear coat over unfinished metal. Other reviewers have mentioned scratching, which happens easily and is especially unsightly on what should have been a blade with an exposed "natural" finish. As I wanted an exposed and easily maintined finish I achieved this with the following process: 1) sand blast to the bare metal, 2) brief dip in a mild acid to darken the blade, 3) thoroughly wipe down with Penetrol, 4) spay coat with lacquer to seal it. I wish knifecenter allowed pics to be uploaded as I feel my results are superior and really bring to light the potential of this knife.

Cons: Finish, None
Unbelievable value
Giving it five stars because of overall quality, balance and profile/design even though it needs handle wrap. (Protective coating chips easily too- no big deal though.) Fantastic 52100 steel. Strong stuff. highly recommended especially for the price
