Pros: Handle Material, Weight, Blade Material, None
Cons: Overall Quality, Finish, Blade Sharpness
Great knife, but needs work
So the steel seems really good, the quality in general seems good; but corners were cut. I spent 5 hours re-profiling the blade edge because, first, the edge is not good, and second, the edge was not centered. The 5 hours was due to the fact that the steel is very hard. That is a plus because it means the heat treat was done well. The steel is not soft; which is what I wanted, and this knife will hold its edge. It also took 5 hours with my work sharp pro belt sander because the edge was not centered at all. Whoever ground my knife did a horrendous job!!!The knife edge out of the box was the typical v-grind that comes on knives from lazy makers. But the worst part was that it wouldn't even slice paper, yet alone shave arm hair. I decided to go to work and re-profile it to a convex grind. The more I worked with it, using the extra course belt on my sander at high RPM, I began to notice two things. First, the knife steel is very hard, which is what you pay for and expect out of 3V. Second, the edge was not centered at all!!! One side of the knife was ground to a fine edge as I worked with it, whereas the other was at least a millimeter off to the other side. I had to remove A LOT of material to re-center the edge. It was very frustrating. Now the knife edge is centered, sharp as hell, and I am happy with it. Beware that if you expect your knife to come ready out of the box for anything other than using it to baton wood or pry open paint cans, then be ready to be disappointed. Considering that most 3V knives are $100 more expensive I was okay with doing some work to it. I just hope though that people know that the workmanship in Italy is less than satisfactory. A side note. The spine of the knife was rounded off. If you want to be able to strike a Ferro rod off the spine of the knife then plan on another 1.5 hours of work to sharpen it up as well. I don't regret the purchase. I generally don't mind putting in leg work to customize/ improve my gear; but know going in that this knife is not ready for prime time out the box.
