Description

ON6155: 6155 Journeyman Fixed Blade

Ontario Knife Company

Modeled after the 499 Air Force Survival Knife, the Journeyman is built for those who wander the terrain instead of the skies. It features the same stacked leather handle, straight crossguard, and hex bolt end cap but is outfitted with a sheepsfoot blade with a slight amount of belly for a wide variety of uses. The spine has a milled area that is great for scraping, scaling and batoning and the black phosphate finish is meant to protect the steel, not look pretty. It has a very tough, rugged feel, as you'd expect but it's the wide blade, thin handle look that draws us to this knife. It is built to last and built to perform, you'll hardly ever pause when reaching for the Journeyman, no matter the cutting task at hand.

Leather Sheath
Leather Sheath Leather is known for its durability and traditional appeal. When compared to Kydex it is preferred for its silence when bumped against other objects, as well as blade retention.
1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel (it will rust) and most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.

Pros: Blade Material, Materials, Handle Material, Weight, Overall Quality, None
Cons: Sheath/Scabbard
Knife decent - what you would expect from Ontario. Sheath poor.
Very similar to the air survival knife sold by Ontario. The leather stacked handle is too small around (like the air survival knife) but will bulk this up with some paracord. The sawback - which is not made for sawing wood - might be good for notching a board or making a figure 4 snare but I had to work like heck to make any groove into a branch. The design for that could be better making the knife more useful. Good thick spine; feels really sturdy. Really like the sheepsfoot blade design and the phosphate coating. Very happy with the knife itself as expected. The sheath is poor. I mean, surprisingly poor coming from such a respected knife company. I know these are made in China but come on guys. The whole thing is really dry, like - it's been stored for years in an attic - dry. The retention straps are too short and started to crack while I was massaging conditioner into them. The thing is designed backward so if you are right handed and wearing it on your right side, the blade is facing forward when you pull it. Looks like they've just recycled an older sheath designed for one of their other knives. Since this knife has the sheepsfoot blade, you have to turn the blade around and wear it facing forward in the sheath or else wear it lefty. I took the sheath apart and assembled it backwards so I can use it. Not pretty but it's needs to be functional.

Pros: Finish, Overall Quality, Handle Material, Sheath/Scabbard
Cons: Sheath/Scabbard, None
nice for the price
Well constructed, serviceably sharp, well made sheath, fit and finish quite good for the price.Only bad points, edges on guard are a bit sharp, knife catches on sheath at ricasso when sheathing but a bit of force seats it fully, also set up for lefties which is a pain and finally retention straps could have been a hair longer as snapping them was a bit of a struggle. Well constructed, serviceably sharp, Nice little knife with a funky design.

Cons: Sheath/Scabbard, Blade Sharpness, None
Good Knife, Poor Sheath
Knife is well put together, solid and fits very well in my hand. The blade was pretty dull when I got it but a few minutes on a stone and it’s nice and sharp now. The sheath is another story. It is a piece of junk, the knife doesn’t come out very easily, it snags on the bottom star. The top strap doesn’t even fit all the way around the handle enough to snap closed. I emailed OKC about the issue three weeks ago and have yet to hear back, so customer service is pretty poor at OKC as well.
