Chopping / Batoning Machine
This camp knife is a step above the rest, related to the excellent 5160 high carbon steel, and the heat treatment given to the steel by, OKC’s Blade Master in Residence, Dan Maragni. His heat treatment gives the steel its hardness, resilience, and fine micro structure (see: review of, Bushcraft Utility, w/DeSantis sheath for more on this excellent steel). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Nice tapered grind on the blade makes batoning and chopping a breeze. Good weight and strength with the ¼” thick spine. Arrived with proper sharpness for a camp knife. Put through many hardwood logs, have done some chopping with it, and have yet to roll or chip the edge. A quick dressing with my Messersharfer (Boker, Ruby Sharpener, available at KnifeCenter.com) and it’s good to go for the next time. Can use ceramic rod, knife steel, leather paddle, or small pocket stone, as well. As with all HC steels, oil regularly to prevent rust. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Walnut scaled handle is not only, “old school,” handsome, but, is generous enough to use with winter gloves on. A very comfortable, hand filling, and secure grip, with quillions, fore and aft. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I’ve used OKC’s nylon sheaths for years, never really gave them much thought. They just worked for my purposes (I don’t usually carry these big choppers back packing r/t weight). Put a small pocket stone, oil pen, Ferro rod in the pouch and you’re good to go. If you don’t like the sheath, take up leather work, or Kydex sheath making. They are skills you will use and enjoy for a lifetime. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I highly recommend the entire OKC Bushcraft line of knives. There is bit of the, “good ole days,” in them, before everything was made in China, and came from a big-box store. As always, thanks KnifeCenter.com for the speedy delivery, excellent service, and great cutlery.
