ON8871: RAT-1A Assisted Opener, Black

Ontario Knife Company

Ontario Knife Company is proud to introduce one of their all-time best selling folding knives, now reissued as assisted openers with their proprietary Tactical Assisted Opening (T.A.O.) technology and G10 handles. This knife has been a long time in the making since the original model was introduced in 2007. The RAT-1 is one of those knives every knife collector should have in their collection, at least at one point. The production quality for the money is absolutely second to none and these knives are built extremely solidly so you can use them for even the toughest tasks. Now, after almost seven years, Ontario has engineered this folding knife for those who prefer an assisted opening blade. They've also improved upon the design by using real G10 for the handles instead of FRN for a better grip under extreme conditions and added a locking mechanism for safety.

Ontario Rat 1 assisted
I've had this knife for few days now. I noticed the blade centering was WAY OFF. The blade leans up against the side the safety is on. When looking down at knife from hinge point I see one brass washer on left and a white silicone washer on right. I called Blue Ridge where they're made and they said it was normal. How can this silicone washer ever hold up? And the blade centering is BEYOND terrible.

Feels like a fixed blade.
I have three assisted opening blades. Kershaw Blur, SOG trident, and now the Ontario model 1-a. Without question, the Ontario feels better in the hand than the other two. Unusually long handle gives the knife a feel of a fixed blade. The handle shape with finger choil gives a very secure grip without fear of your hand sliding up on the blade. Allows different grip techniques. G-10 handles are very grippy and, solid. Could be a bit abrasive on pockets, but that could likely be remedied with lightly sanding scales. Bigger than what I like for an EDC, but I am sure others will appreciate the slim design and relatively light weight if one desires an EDC of this size. This will be my outdoor companion along with the Ontario Night Stalker 4 fixed blade. I feel I could filet with it, do more detailed wood working, and IMHO it would be a nice tactical blade as well.Unique blade positioning in relation to the center axis of handle creates a nice thumb ramp as well as a unique feel when working with the blade..Initial impressions are all positive with the exception of the ease of opening, which is apparently a bit counter intuitive. Between my three assisted openers, this is by far the most difficult to open. Something about the geometry of the opening arc and the thumbstud require a little practice. Once you figure it out it's no problem, but at least initially it's different. Looking forward to getting to know it much better. Very happy with this purchase from KnifeCenter. Great deal, even better value.

Well I was right and I was right. The assisted opening has loosened up and is much easier to use now. Enough to warrant this system over the unassisted Rat 1? That's debatable. The sliding safety crapped out and would move on and off safe by just tilting the knife up or down. A dab of superglue on the safety in the "off" position has fixed that problem. Still, a good knife with some notable problems.
