A Nessmuk, by any other name…
One thing some knife makers get wrong on the Nessmuk Fixed Blade is they put the point too high. The point on the Nessmuk’s original is actually centered, not trailing like a skinner. This Fisherman’s Pal has a nice centered point, making it a very versatile knife. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Are these handle scales Rosewood, or, are they Pakkawood? The answer is, “Yes.” This is Rosewood impregnated with resin (making it Rosewood Pakkawood), making this handle practically impervious to the elements. The handle is comfortable and secure in the hand. You can take some 100 grit and rough-up the scales a little for improved grip. You’re not going to hurt ‘em any. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Arrived sharp, nice grinds, thin edge. Nice feel in the hand, even though handle is a bit short for my big hands. No discomfort noted. Sheath is simple, but well made, with rivets all around. This sheath will work for left, or right hand carry. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Prefer carbon steel and natural wood handles? Check out R. Murphy’s, Pathfinders (Part #’s RMPATHF [single edge], + RMPATH2S [double edge/serrated spine]). I call them outdoorsman’s paring knives; real handy for bird n trout/hunting/stiff boning/kitchen/utility. Check ‘em out. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is a poor man’s Nessmuk. But, let the high-end knife steel snobs scoff. This will do everything their Nessmuks will do (+ scale fish, too), at a fraction of the cost for many years, while you save up for your Nordsmith Canteen Knife (you just might have to sharpen a little more often).

Great value for the money
This is the third Murphy knife I have purchased from KCI and I have to say I am never disappointed with either the service or the product. Primarily I wanted an affordable knife for woods roaming, something with a heavy enough blade and not to long but yet not too short. Living in an area where every few years a young cougar tends to pass through also made me think of something for minimal safety. This fills the bill and didn't break the bank. The blade was sharp out of the box and the handle a good fit with the wood -I believe Rosewood- varnished. I would have preferred an oiled handle but since this was intended for fishing I am thinking they used a spar varnish. The sheath for the price point is awesome. Buttery smooth leather with no snap for a quicker draw. Honestly, the only drawbacks for me is that I would have preferred a 5 inch blade and a slightly larger cut on the sheath for the belt. Otherwise, this is a perfect knife.
