RMJDRGFLY: Dragonfly Push Dagger

RMJ Tactical

Years ago when Ryan Johnson was making a special order knife for a SWAT team member, a good friend and resident critic John came by the shop to look the knife over. "The tip is too narrow and thin," he said. "It will break if the person using the knife tries to pry something open." Ryan told him that this knife was not meant to be used as a pry-bar, just for cutting.

John then said something that both defined the word "tactical" and, most importantly, changed Ryan's design paradigm forever: "The situations this person finds himself in should determine what this knife is used for. If he needs to cut something, it cuts. If he has to pry a door open, it's a pry-bar. These are high-energy situations where every second counts. You can't carry everything you would like to carry; the knife will have to be able to complete a multitude of tasks."

In a perfect world, a soldier or law enforcement officer would have ready access to all of the tools and weapons he ever needed, but that just isn't possible. It takes more than an aggressive look or a gray and black finish to make a fixed blade a tactical knife. Remember, knives meet the needs of the soldiers and frontiersman as both a tool and weapon in the battlefield conditions they encounter. In Ryan's view, a contemporary tactical fixed blade should be able to withstand all modern battlefield conditions — areas ranging from the Salt Lake City, Utah, Olympics, to the Jungles of South America, to the rugged mountains in Afghanistan. (RMJ Tactical knives have been carried in all three).

The Dragonfly is a compact push dagger that gives excellent transfer of force and possesses great ergonomics. The blade is designed to rest between the middle and the ring finger, this aligns the blade to be centered to the arm when punching, providing the best transfer of force from the blade down the arm. The large handle provides firm contact with the palm of the hand to minimize impact shock and is easily wrapped with 550 paracord for additional comfort. It measures 4.75" overall with a 2.25" Nitro-V stainless steel blade wearing a tungsten Cerakote finish. The Kydex sheath carries discreetly on the belt with two provided multi-directional BioThane scout carry straps. Whether you are law enforcement, military or a civilian looking for a knife that is easy to conceal, quick to draw, and can be done without direct line of sight, this is a great option for you.

Pros: Blade Material, Weight, Sheath/Scabbard, None
Cons: Overall Quality, Finish, Blade Sharpness
Not RMJ’s usual quality.
I own three other fantastic RMJ knives. I love the products, I love the company. Hoping this is just a fluke. The sharpened edges are severely uneven. The edge bevels go from fat to thin to fat again on both sides. I know it’s more of a weapon than a cutting tool, but the edge should still be even and able to cut well. Not a huge deal but at this price I’d expect higher quality. There is some scuffing on one of the edges. The edges themselves are not RMJ’s usual sharpness, likely because of the uneven factory edge. The middle hole in the blade is comically off center, as if the knife was misaligned when the holes were drilled, extending off of the flat blade center and encroaching on the beveled part of the blade. The sheath is well made and nice and snug, as I prefer, some may think it’s too snug but I’ll take security over ease-of-draw any day. I love RMJ’s products, hoping this is just a one-time ‘whoops’. I’m strongly considering returning it and getting another RMJ Utsidihi.
