RPDPHTF007: HEAT/F Triple Black
DPx Gear

In 2010 Robert Young Pelton took his original 3" 1095 Shon Rowen-made fixed survival blade and turned it into a brutal use locking folder. He demanded the best, American made Ti aerospace grade titanium alloy and Olive Drab G10 to create an integral, no scale frame. Then he added a German D2 Tool Steel blade, mil spec coated it, and had it machined in Northern Italy - the same place they make Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Ducatis.

But there are other groups that want the same no-expense-spared approach to the under 3" inch blade. Law enforcement, military and first responders wanted less blade, more knife. And they still wanted the glass breaker, rapid deployment, non lethal ergonomic grip and quality. So the Hostile Environment At Hand Tool (HEAT) was born.

Dpx Gear prides itself on the fact that their knives hold up against any task in any given circumstance. The HEAT is the embodiment of DPx Gear, built tough but also a pleasure to use. This compact folder features a Niolox blade, which has the edge retention of a carbon steel, but the added corrosion resistance of a stainless steel. The blade is Matte Black TiCN PVD coated along with the 6Al4V grade 5 titanium alloy frame lock. G10 handles ensure that the environment is not an adversary. The black G10 scale opposite of the titanium alloy is a lightweight design that doesn't sacrifice grip or comfort. The HEAT features a bottle opener/ thumb grip, a deep carry pocket clip engraved with Mr. DP, and bold thumb jimping. The DPx Gear HEAT/F is as much blade as you need, in a beefy, pocket friendly package.

Pros: Blade Material, Ease of Opening, Pocket Clip, Blade Sharpness, Handle Feel, Handle Material, None
Cons: Lock Type, Overall Quality
Nice at first, but not for long
This quickly became my favorite knife for every day use -- unless I was wearing dress pants, and then it's a bit heavy. The blade is really nice and was quite sharp out of the box. The blade opens and closes like butter. I really like the size and grip ergonomics. But after a month or so of light use, it no longer locked up tight and there is a lot of vertical play in the blade. A frame lock should outlast the first sharpening on a knife in this price range.
