RUG1201K: Crack-Shot Compact Folding Knife, Black Stonewashed

Ruger by CRKT

Inspired by the Ruger American Rifle, the Crack-Shot Compact is designed by Ken Steigerwalt. Featuring the Outburst assisted-opening and Fire Safe blade safety, each knife is built to be reliable and efficient. The assisted opening rockets out the blade for quick deployment while the safety ensures the blade is always locked when you want it. The 3.5" blade is made from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel and features a black stonewashed finish.

About Ruger

This exclusive Ruger knife line includes designs for everyday carry, hunting, tactical uses and self-preparedness. The knives are crafted in varying sizes and finishes, with an assortment of blade edges. Developed by five master knife-smiths who combined their knowledge of the art with aesthetic details from Ruger firearms, the line offers unique knives with the important features that every good knife should have. These knives are purpose built to be durable and highly functional in the environments where Ruger customers will expect them to perform. All knives are manufactured by CRKT.

About the Designer

Ever since he was a kid, if Ken needed a knife, he just made one. His first knife was built from a saw blade at the kitchen table using a vise, files and sandpaper. Needless to say, he's gone on to create more highly-designed knives that have won 11 BLADE Show Awards in seven consecutive years, including two Best Folder awards and one award for Best Folder of the Year. He also co-designed the patented Fire Safe safety innovation, which is used on many CRKT knives.

Cons: None
It's a keeper
There are many things I like about this knife. It's sharp right out of the box, perfectly centered, no blade play, liner lock-up is solid, and it feels great in the hand. The GRN handles give a sure grip, without being too aggressive in the pocket. I'm not usually one to gravitate toward black stonewash, but I do like the finish on this blade, As for the "Outburst® assisted-opening and Fire Safe® blade safety" mechanism, it takes some getting used to, since you have to press down on the single (right-hand-only) thumb stud while at the same time pushing out in the usual opening manner. It's a clever design, but for me it's more novel than useful on an everyday basis. However, it does work well--and the "outburst" is fast. But this is apparently not a knife designed for lefties. The hollow grind means good slicing capability. The pocket clip is tip-down only. The weight of the knife surprised me: at first it seemed heavy for its size (although not uncomfortable), but my digital scale says 3.85 ounces. As such, its weight adds to the overall feeling of solidness and durability. NOTE: CRKT currently lists this knife (all variants) as "discontinued" on its website.
