Superior knife for backcountry use.
I've gone through many knives in search of that one knife capable of virtually any use I can throw at it in the backcountry--hiking, camping, possible survival. I think this knife is it. It is adequately long, extremely durable, has an excellent and safety promoting handle for a very secure grip. It also has the bead-blasted satin blade. There is no reason for the blade to be non-reflective for my uses, and this finish lasts longer than a non-reflective coating. Also, the ridges on the spine are to aid with batoning by helping the wood get a bite on the blade. They aren't there just for looks. The Seal Pup Elite has replaced my too-heavy for hiking Becker BK-2, an otherwise excellent Ka-Bar USN Mark I, a slippery-gripped Cold Steel Pocket Bushman (nice knife that would benefit from better steel and some kind of tooling to provide a more secure grip), and the lovely Morakniv 4.3" Bushcraft, which is my 2nd favorite. If the Morakniv had a better sheath, more durable handle and was full tang rather than stick tang, it would probably be a tie between that and the Seal Pup Elite. I take the Morakniv on day hikes--it's practically weightless. I also prefer the nylon sheath. It has a little carry pouch where I keep a small sharpener so I always have it with me. The only con is the velcro that holds that pouch closed was not stitched on completely, so I did it myself.

Surprisingly good
I tend not to give the top rating--in this case a five--to good products unless they really stand out in multiple ways, so I am a bit surprised to be giving such a rating to a knife that, from the specs alone, appears to be a pretty average mid-grade factory knife. The price, the steel, the handle, the sheath, they don't suggest the kind of performance this one can dish out. But I'd say this knife is the exception to the rule. I have yet to own a SOG product (with the exception of their budget "fusion" series stuff) that lacked great fit and finish, so I wasn't all that surprised that this one was smooth, solid, and sophisticated. I was surprised by how wickedly effective the edge performs, and how well it stands up to weather, water, and heavy use (abuse in some cases) over time. The ergonomics are spot on, and it is fairly light, so it causes less fatigue with continuous use. Despite being light, though, this guy can absorb quite a bit of punishment. At about 5 inches, it is just the right size for general "survival knife" chores without being cumbersome or getting in the way. The nylon sheath, or at least my nylon sheath, has held up for years of regular carry, and the worst I can say is that it has gotten a bit dirty. The velcro pouch snuggly holds cleaning and sharpening equipment, which means I always have what I need to care for it, and thus can make it last even longer. SOG has hit a grand slam with this design, made even more surprising when you consider how affordable it is. It outshines pretty much anything else in its price range.
