SPMCUSST: Copper Strobe Spinning Top
Shire Post Mint
This top maximizes a spinning strobe pattern. The rings will look to spin different directions as they change with the strobe aspect of smartphone video or 110V LED lights. The best effects are obtained in full sunlight with video taken from a smartphone. The spinner can be spun on either side of the coin. The contact points are on both sides and are indestructible Si3N4 (silicon nitride) black ceramic. These contact points will provide long spin times up to 12 minutes!

This Copper Strobe Spinning Top is struck from solid copper one at a time in the USA using antique machinery and traditional coining techniques. It measures 1.24" (3.15 cm) in diameter and weighs about 1.2 ounces (35 grams). Coin artwork by Woody Maringer. A description card with facts about the coin and gift packaging are included from Shire Post Mint.

I did not realize when purchasing this copper disc that the promised experience is entirely vicarious. The patterns are only visible on digital video. When spinning this in front of the naked eye, there was nothing to see under any combination of lights that I tried. Video taken on my iPhone of the spinning disc did reveal some interesting (yawn) patterns. Any number of CGI graphic algorithms can do exactly the same thing.

Kinda cool fidget item
If you set your phone camera to time lapse...that is when you can see the patterns best. for $50 the weight and craftsmanship is cool...the fun factor, well...
