Cut Too Many Corners, But Still a Good Knife!
The S&W Homeland Security was once a superb knife. Now the blade has lost its 440C badge and is made from 7Cr17 (440A), and its coating no longer is titanium powder as far as I can tell. It used to be much nicer than it is now, but alas, someone at S&W decided to lower the notch a few pegs and keep the price steady. But in my view they cut too many corners. They not only cheapened the steel and the coating, they sliced a few corners in the sheath. The older sheaths were heavier and much better made. In short, they left cut corners all over the place! So that's ancient history. How are the knives now? It's hard not to judge them on how they used to be, but for the price the knife is still an adequate chopper, cutter and self defense tool. It's heavy, easy to sharpen, attractive and it's tough. Mine's going in my car trunk. It is perfect for chopping ice in wheel wells, chopping down small trees, cutting cardboard, use as a crowbar and a host of other uses. It wouldn't be my first choice as a survival knife, but you can do a lot worse. I can't predict how the sheath will hold up, but time will tell on that. For the price, it's a good knife. I'm glad I picked up a few of the older models though. I wish S&W would have continued its old knife and just raised the price a few bucks.

Great knife, terrible sheath
The knife itself is great. Sharpens well and can take a beating while getting the job done. On the other hand, the sheath is hot garbage. The plastic insert grabs the blade way too tightly and is barely secured to the nylon by a single grommet at the end, which WILL tear out on you. If you plan to take this knife anywhere with you, get yourself a better sheath.
