SWEDF1PRO: F1 Pro Swedish Survival Knife
Fallkniven

There are survival knives, and there are survival knives for the professional survivor. Fallkniven's model F1 has provided exceptional service for more than twenty years and thanks to their outstanding quality and durability, the F1 will continue to do so for many years to come. Nevertheless, the desire to strive for continual improvement has led Fallkniven to develop the Pro Series which takes the concept of the survival knife to unimaginable heights of quality. Fallkniven began developing this impressive knife in 2010 and five years later, they are able to offer a survival knife which sets the benchmark for survival knife manufactures the world over.

To put it simply, a knife is a blade and a handle. But if this vital tool is to remain strong and stay sharp, you have to add fairly decent materials. If you then claim to call a knife "professional", you take on a responsibility to the user to raise the bar above what is normal. Taking this responsibility seriously, Fallkniven has made a number of improvements found here in the "Pro Series".

The first difference is the use of laminated cobalt steel instead of the traditional laminated VG10 use in its predecessors which ensures a durable edge and greater edge retention. The blades are now thicker to withstand greater external forces and feature a cross guard permanently mounted to the tang. The tapered tang is now wider and thick adding to the overall strength of this knife. The Zytel sheaths have been redesigned to be more durable and better suited to the MOLLE attachment system. Each knife is also supplied with Fallkniven's DC4 combination whetstone, which offers both a diamond whetstone and ceramic stone for field sharpening. Last but not least, it includes a shock-resistant, waterproof box that can be used to store the knife or other survival gear.

Huge in quality and price
For the price they charge, they could well give you one of the best knives in its category... and they surely do. Unless you are chopping elephants and monster trucks, this knife will be plenty... beyond your requirements. Is it worth to spend so much when less knife would be enough for you? You decide. As a general-purpose, factory-built knife you will find very few others which might be a little better in one aspect, and a little not-so-good in others. This is more than twice the price of their already amazing F1 (no "pro") (which I had before), it is more than twice its hardness, at least as hansome (eye of the beholder) and better to handle. More suitable for chopping and splitting, than for clean long cuts (steep angle of edge and blade). You might need a machete, a pocket knife, or an axe... or you may not. But knives this size always have their place in almost any situation. I've camped (adding my 2 to 6-month stays, I've lived in tents for over 4 years). I've used them in most situations and tasks: no fault... except that steep angle of blade. Not advisable for easy daily uses like the kitchen, where routine can make you less careful; this heavyweight razor is made for almost digging a tunnel through a seqoia... not for fast dressing of vegetables with your ten fingers dancing around every day. I like the practical simplicity of the "plastic" sheath resistant to the elements. I like the "rubbery" handle covering all the metal in cold freezing weather. I like its presentation and included accesories. And I'm not rich enough to really try to see how hard you have to do to break that laminated special steel. But it has already resisted lots of very tough cutting... I was really tired, ant the knife was like saying: When do we really start working? It might be too much for your needs or budget... but you will never need (or want?) to change it for another 10 cm blade.

Cons: Weight, Sheath/Scabbard
Oh yea! The Best This Size...Ever!
Got the whole Pro line now, and the F1 Pro is an overbuilt baby monster that will do whatever you need as best as it can.The S1 is bigger and the A1 is bigger still, but for a smaller blade, the F1 Pro is a formadable hunting, outdoor weapon. If you are looking for something in this size range, this is by far the best. By far!
