Description
TOAMAR01: AMAR-01 Al Mar Mini SERE Operator
TOPS Knives

The SERE Operator by Al Mar is perhaps one of the most well-known tactical knife designs out there, and for good reason. It’s a classic design with great lines, ergonomics, and usefulness. It was recognized as a great design by Colonel James “Nick” Rowe, who is credited with designing some of the US Army’s SERE training at Camp Mackall.

In 2016 TOPS began working with the owner of Al Mar Knives, to begin manufacturing the Mini SERE Operator in the USA. The Mini SERE Operator is the same design as the original, but somewhat smaller. This makes it an excellent EDC tool in addition to an easily concealable self-defense knife. The 0.125" thick blade is extremely sharp with a tip and false edge that are great for stabbing and slashing. The handles are thin and comfortable in forward and reverse grips. TOPS’ version is made with 154CM stainless steel, durable black G10 handles, and a Kydex belt sheath.

TOPS is honored to be given the opportunity to build this iconic knife and will be for many years to come.

The medium SERE...
This may be too of a compromise for some folks, but I love it. It is big enough for medium duty survival work, but slim and fast enough for street carry if you are legally qualified to do so. The sheath fit is excellent, but I don't care for the spring clip. It comes off easily, but this does void the warranty. A great mid sized fix blade. I wish TOPS would make their own take of the full sized Operator. That would make a great addition, especially in 154CM.

Great Blade
I love this Knife. Took it out the first day I got it. It my not be a 1095 Steel like most Tops . Yet I love me a collaboration with Al Mar any time. The 154CM Steel is keeping up with all the regular task of the woods . Cutting , Medium Batoning , Feathering , and Stabbing.

Mangia! Mangia!
Love this knife. Great steel. Like the fact that its a naked steel. Never liked the coated blades. I know its good for anti rust and all that, but when you use it, the rough coating increases friction on the material. Not to mention that its more hassle to clean when food prepping. Yes, this knife is supposed to be "tactical" but come on, most of us will use our tactical knives to spread peanut butter then opening up an artery. This size and weight makes more sense as a EDC type of knife anyway. the handle is slender (too thin, in my opinion). Its a good design but I just think it needs tiny more girth. Also the surface could be more textured, especially since its on the slim side. So I did a cord wrap on the bottom half of the grip. Still easy to conceal/carry, but a lot more grippier now. The the paper thin kydex sheath is perfect in keeping the thin/concealment theme going. the fit is awesome. They hand mold each sheath, I've heard, and it sure feels like it. I took off the clip so it tucks in my belt like a shim. I corded one of the eyelets to my belt loop from sliding all the way down (copied it from CKRT Obake). The blade, I think could've been just a tad thicker also. Not the usual TOPS thick, but just a tad thicker than now. I don't think it will break, but it may be questionable if knocked down hard on the ground. Take note, see the huge hole that is in the handle? The one near the blade makes me bit nervous because it takes a significant amount of steel off that area weakening the lateral structure. It probably is still strong enough to withstand normal use, but in that "tactical" environment, things could happen. Actually imagine a backpack falling off the shelf and landing on the knife sideways... that could do some real damage. The design of the blade is great. Super stabber with its thin point and nice swedge. Its probably not too bad as a slasher, but because of its light weight, it may be not as good at that. Chopping? forget about it. The edge came very sharp. I stropped it a bit. The gimping is nice. You can use your index finger on the gimping to get nice control of the blade when opening boxes...(there is the EDC application again). I think this knife is almost perfect... except it could've gained some weight and grow a bit wider. Mangia! Mangia! as the Italian grandma would say.
