Pros: Overall Quality, Material Quality, Construction
Cons: Sharpness, None
These took a while to get to me as they were probably not in stock and had to be shipped from Germany. The block they came with has holes that go all the way through the bottom. The shears come apart if you open them far enough for cleaning. The knives are sturdy in construction. They have a full tang and are well finished. No rough edges and no gaps between the wood and the metal in the handle. The bevel seems to have been set by a grinder, so some work would probably have to be done to get them set up for future ease of honing. The balance is different for each knife. The chef's knife balances right where you would hold it with your index finger, about 1/2 an inch from the heel of the blade. The utility knife balances an inch below the heel. The paring knife balances an inch and a half below the heel. The bread knife balances where the index finger rests about half an inch below the heel. The steel balances about an inch above the guard. All the blades were nice and straight, no weird bends. The handles fit my hand pretty well, and I wear size 8 gloves. The last half inch of my palm hung over the edge of the handle, but that's what I find with most knives made for the general public. The set came with a few freebies as well. I got a little digital timer with a magnet on the back of it. I got another wood block, in the same style as the one that came with the set, but in a different color. I also got another steel with a plastic handle and another set of shears with plastic handles. I put a coat of what I am guessing is mineral oil on the handles (it came with the set) and they seem to be fine with it. No excessive swelling at this point. It also came with a little cloth to wipe them down with. I am satisfied with their function so far. No complaints other than the shipping time.
