Description
ZT0850: Model 0850 Folding Knife
Zero Tolerance Knives

When two big designers collaborate, you can expect greatness - and the ZT 0850 by Dmitry Sinkevich and Todd Rexford does not disappoint. Big, bold and yet incredibly light, the ZT 0850 is a master class in balance and flow.

Pick up the 0850 and the first thing you'll notice is the weight, or lack thereof. Despite a 3.75" blade, the knife comes in at just a hair over 4 ounces. That is all thanks to the stunning blue carbon fiber handles and the patented Sub-Frame Lock. Rather than a full titanium back piece, the only Ti piece is the lockbar itself which is anchored to the carbon fiber. This grants all the stability of a standard frame lock without the bulk.

The blade itself sports a dramatic shape and CPM-20CV steel with two-tone stonewash/satin finish. This powdered metallurgy steel offers outstanding edge holding capability and corrosion resistance. The 0850 opens manually using a decorative aluminum thumb stud, machined to echo the cylinder of a revolver. That design element is picked up by the oversized pivot and the impressive milled cylindrical backspacer. A milled titanium pocket clip and Teflon-coated hardware complete the package.

Few knives out there combine high performance, light weight, and gorgeous looks the way the ZT 0850 does. Don't let this one slip through your fingers!

History of the ZT 0850

Dmitry and Todd had always admired each other’s work, so perhaps it was inevitable that they would eventually collaborate. That time came early in 2016. They talked and agreed to work on a project together. Dmitry provided a drawing of an initial concept. Todd worked out the design details and décor. Together, they went to work in Todd’s Colorado workshop, sawing, milling, sharpening, and polishing. Eventually, they built only two completely astounding knives - and sold them almost instantly.

Zero Tolerance decided that two was not enough. ZT talked with Dmitry and Todd and they agreed to work with them on a production version of their collaboration. The 0850 is the result.

Nice knife. First off, it didn't come very sharp. I spent 4 hrs putting a razor edge on it. The blade takes a while to sharpen but it holds an edge longer. The carbon handle is light. Almost lighter than the blade. My thumb wants to rest on the jimping and not the dip after the jimping. I'm not sure what the dip in the blade is for. Maybe holding it with your index finger up there for more exact cutting.I am encountering the issue with the closed knife being hard to open if my hands are in the wrong spot. The detent holding the knife closed is attached to the lock. Your finger wants to put pressure on the lock when opening. I think this is an issue with several frame lock knives. You have to retrain yourself how to hold this knife when opening it. I have big hands and like a bigger knife. I would like the handle to be a bit thicker or wider but it's pretty good for a folder. I really prefer the feel of a fixed blade knife with a thicker handle. Some people don't like the thumb stud. I'm used to it since one of my first knives was an old Benchmade Emerson design with the thumb stud. The clip can not be repositioned. It's a blade up carry design. I prefer the blade down carry design I got used to from Benchmade in the late 90's.The handle bolster are held together by a round metal piece. It's pretty cool and unique. I like the knife overall. I'm going to carry it for a while to try to get used to it.

Light and tight... zero tolerance
Let me start by saying there are too many bad reviews about this knife, along with too many misconceptions. I find this knife to be one of the most technologically advanced of all time. They should give this thing to astronauts. The carbon fiber is done with precision and there are no rough edges. The titanium lock bar is anchored firmly within. We’re talking zero blade play. The steel is among the best in production folders. The backspacer is uniquely modeled after ammo rounds, and at the same time is weighted to perfection. This knife balances perfectly on the index finger just a hair forward of the choil. One review stated that the knife anchored the pocket clip in the cf. This is a lie. The pocket clip is anchored into the titanium lockbar with two screws, it’s not going anywhere. The detent is superior to almost every one of my production folders and rivals some of my mid techs and customs. I love that this blade uses washers. I need a hard use knife and bearings simply get dirty and fail in mud. The thumb stud is oversized but for sharpening service it is removed via a torx screw. The amount of pressure you can put on this thumb stud exceeds anything you could do with a flipper. This is a hard use knife and purpose built. This should be no surprise given the two designers. Lastly this knife has one of the best sheepsfoot blades I’ve ever come across. It’s utilitarian period. If you’re looking for a hard use folder, with space age components and a sizable but functional blade look no further. This is a steal at the current price. No safe queens here, I’m going to use this knife everyday.

Not for me
Great materials, nice ergos but the detent is too strong. Even when removing your fingers from the lock back, it's still not easy to open because you don't have a solid purchase on the knife.
