BCCHIV123LD34: Custom Heritage Series 3-5/8" Mastadon Ivory Damascus Outrider
Bear & Son Cutlery
This knife features ivory taken from buried, extinct mammals and not from any living species. These products do not contribute to the slaughter or maiming of living creatures.

Bear & Son owner Ken Griffey found himself looking through some old family photographs some time ago and became drawn to a particular photograph he had never seen before. It was a photo of his Grandfather holding an old Robeson knife. He could not wait to call his father to see if he knew about the whereabouts of the knife. Not only did they find the knife but they also found a few other knives his Grandfather had owned as well. We all come to think about our heritage at some point in our lives, the photograph of Griffey's Grandfather really made him focus on his own. What could be more appropriate than for Bear & Son Cutlery to make some knives in the style of those old knives his Grandfather had owned and loved so long ago?

Now that Ken Griffey's son, Matt, is in the business, the timing seems perfect for the launch of this new Bear & Son Cutlery Collection. How very special it is for a father to work with his son on the Heritage Collection, which will be cherished for years to come. These knives are made in tribute to Ken Griffey's Grandfather and to also continue the tradition of master craftsman long ago.

His Grandfather would be proud of the American-made quality with which these knives are made. They feature genuine Mastodon Ivory handles, most have long nail pull marks and highly polished 440 Stainless Steel or Damascus blades. The Heritage Collection features a special tang stamp, blade etch, inlaid shield, and comes packaged in a special tin box. More than 91 hand steps by a staff of skilled craftsman will assure the quality matching those knives that were favorites of Ken Griffey's Grandfather so long ago.

Damascus steel combines steels of different properties and produces blades with extraordinary toughness and edge-holding ability. Known as the Steel of the Ancients, Damascus knives and swords have lived in legend since the creation of Damascus steel nearly 2,000 years ago. The ancient city of Damascus was one of the centers of production of this steel. That, combined with the fact that the steel resembled the damask cloth which was being produced in the city of Damascus- both having a “water-marked” pattern- gave this steel its name. Viewed under a microscope, the cutting edge of a Damascus blade displays tiny saw-tooth carbides which are formed by forging in a coal fire. This enables the blade to cut even when it feels dull to the touch. Flexibility is superb. Every piece of Damascus is as unique as a thumb print. When ground on an angle, as in a blade, the displayed pattern is stunning. Note: Limited quantities available.
