BM485171: 485-171 Valet - Gold Class
Benchmade

The Valet is reborn as a work of art in this exclusive, titanium Gold Class knife. The Valet is a medium size folder and a great choice for everyday carry. It features a 2.96" Ladder Damasteel blade and blue-violet contoured titanium handles. Solid AXIS lock lockup and a reversible deep-pocket carry clip. The 485 Valet is just a great overall choice for anyone looking for a quality knife with premium materials and quality craftsmanship.

The AXIS Lock mechanism is a patented Benchmade exclusive and has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spans the liners, and is positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar its inertia to engage the knife tang. As a result, the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

BENCHMADE GOLD CLASS VALET 485-171 PRODUCTION #30
Knife is blue-violet anodized titanium with Damascus blade and black metal clip. Knife is used as an everyday carry for light duty. Typically I carry the knife clipped in my blue jeans pocket. Similar knives I own that are in the same general price range and use in the same way include Benchmade Megumi, Chris Reeve small Sebenza, Chris Reeve Mnandi, William Henry Lancet, William Henry Spearpoint, William Henry Gentac, William Henry EDC and AG Russell ACES II. The knife is very well built and operates smoothly. Feels rock solid and extremely strong. The quality of the blade is top notch and it has a beautiful edge. Although the handle material is titanium the knife overall is relatively heavy compared to those listed above, probably heaviest of them all. The handles are ribbed with a matte finish which gives a good grip but the finish is not very durable. I've had the knife about a month and already some of the anodized color on the edges of the ribs has worn off. The knife shipped with the clip slightly loose which caused it to rattle. I was able to solve that by removing the clip, bending it slightly and re-installing. That process however caused some of the finish on the handles to rub off. The AXIS lock is very solid; initially stiff to release but getting easier to disengage over time. The look and proportions of the knife both opened and closed are terrific. Overall an excellent knife, but I'm disappointed in the durability of the finish. Of the knives above I'd rate this one in the middle of the pack. For my light duty purposes, the ones I go to first are the William Henry Spearpoint and Lancet. They are both unbelievably light, but tough and extremely well built.
