BM553BK: 553BK Tanto Griptilian
The Griptilian is born of custom knife maker Mel Pardue's passion for functional designs. You release the creature's ferocity with a thumb stud. At the very heart of the Griptilian, is the exclusive AXIS™ locking mechanism. This modern marvel gives life to a cutting tool like you have never experienced before, especially in a lightweight folder. Rock-solid ambidextrous function is sure to tame the most die-hard of traditionalists. And you can grab onto the lightweight, injection molded handle with its grip-textured surface and rib covered spine that grabs you right back for a "can't let go" grip. The Model 551 also comes with a reversible carry-clip for right or left side carry.

  • 154CM: An American made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.
  • TANTO: Most tantos seen on the American cutlery market are Americanized formats. Like the Japanese tanto, the Americanized tanto has a high point in-line with the pivot. A flat grind is applied to the point, leaving it very thick and extraordinarily strong. This thick area helps absorb the impact from piercing, as the tanto was originally designed for armor piercing. The front edge meets the bottom edge at an obtuse angle rather than curving to meet it as seen in the Japanese tanto. The only negative aspect of the tanto blade shape is the cutting surface area is sacrificed to gain tip strength.
  • AXIS® A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it’s inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

NIce Knife
I have the same knife with a combo blade. Sometimes it is good to just have a plain blade. Great locking mechanism. Easy to open. Easy to clean. Great materials. Will probably last forever with good care.

Needs something more to warrant the asking price
I bought this knife with the intent of using it as my new EDC knife. When it arrived I was somewhat disappointed in the construction. I'll use the analogy of a Glock pistol. There is all this talk out there of how great Glocks well made they are and of such high quality. Having handled a few Glocks they give me the same impression as the Griptilian. The impression is that the manufacturer cut as many corners as they could to reduce the cost of building the gun, or knife. About the only metal pieces on a Glock are the barrel and the trigger mechanism. The Griptilian has a metal blade and there is a partial frame inside the scales, but 80% of the handle is plastic. I'm sure for both tools this saves on the weight, but to me it conveys a feeling of cheepness. This knife sells for as high as $120 and you don't get much for that price. All that said, I do like the knife. It's a little bulky to wear everyday, but then again it's nice to have the size if you need it. The Axis system works very well, enabling you to flick the knife open or closed with one hand. The blade stays securely locked open. It is also nice to be able to remove the pocket clip, or switch it from side to side, or exchange it for another style, if you see fit. The blade comes fairly sharp. I've sharpened the knife once, using my Lansky sharpener. The steel isn't the hardest I have worked with. It sharpened fairly quickly using just the 3 finer stones in my Lansky kit. I'll see how it holds an edge in the future, but from what I've seen so far the edge seems to hold up okay. Overall this is a nice knife, I just don't think it is $80 to $120 worth of nice.
