BM557P: 557 Tanto Mini Griptilian
Benchmade Knives
The Griptilian is born of custom knife maker Mel Pardue's passion for functional designs. You release the creature's ferocity with a thumb stud. At the very heart of the Griptilian, is the exclusive AXIS locking mechanism. This modern marvel gives life to a cutting tool like you have never experienced before, especially in a lightweight folder. Rock-solid ambidextrous function is sure to tame the most die-hard of traditionalists. And you can grab onto the lightweight, injection molded handle with its grip-textured surface and rib covered spine that grabs you right back for a "can't let go" grip. The Griptilian also comes with a reversible carry-clip for right or left side carry.

  • 154CM: An American made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.
  • TANTO: Most tantos seen on the American cutlery market are Americanized formats. Like the Japanese tanto, the Americanized tanto has a high point in-line with the pivot. A flat grind is applied to the point, leaving it very thick and extraordinarily strong. This thick area helps absorb the impact from piercing, as the tanto was originally designed for armor piercing. The front edge meets the bottom edge at an obtuse angle rather than curving to meet it as seen in the Japanese tanto. The only negative aspect of the tanto blade shape is the cutting surface area is sacrificed to gain tip strength.
  • AXIS® A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it’s inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

Pros: Blade Material, Overall Quality, Lock Ease of Use, Weight, Ease of Opening, Blade Sharpness
Cons: None
Best daily carry knife I have ever owned.
I received a 557 from a close friend and blade collector who picked it up for me as a gift at the Blade Show a few years ago. It has not left my side since I first took it out of the box and I can say it is by far the best daily carry knife I have ever owned. The blade is a tantō with a black finish and the body is a nice sand dessert brown/tan. It holds an edge and has just been one solid utilitarian knife, I use it for everything from opening boxes to cutting meat. I highly recommend this model if you want a knife that is small enough for daily carry and large enough for work.

Pros: Lock Type, Handle Material, Handle Feel, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Ease of Opening, Weight, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material
Cons: None
Exactly what I wanted for EDC.
I have another benchmade that's very similar in make, but just a bit too big for every day carry, and was looking for something else just like it, shrunken down. This is exactly what I wanted. Sturdy, solid, easy to keep a razor+ edge with my EdgePro. I have a dozen or so other edc, a lot of wharncliffe blades which I really like, but I wanted something a lot sturdier. The blade's thick without being TOO thick, the tanto design lends much strength to the blade if you need it, and all without being too bulky. In fact a friend checking it out commented "I know it's a quality knife and all, but it's so light, just seems it should be heavier" Don't get me wrong, it in no way feels flimsy, just no extra bulk. Solid, good blade metal, fits great in the hand, easy to open, lock and unlock and close, and affordable. Highly recommend.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Ease of Opening, Overall Quality, Handle Material, Lock Ease of Use, Lock Type, Weight, Sheath, Handle Feel, Blade Material
Cons: Pocket Clip, None
I am using this as a utility knife and i like it so far, especially the blade style and the grip, the only negative issue is the color on the pocket clip is getting fade, but that is not a big deal as of the moment and hopefully it will take long before the blade gets dull and rusted.
