The Best Knife I Ever Hated When I First Saw It
A little about me. I'm well over 6' with bigger hands, so this is a comfortable EDC for me. It may be too big for some people. My favorite knife maker is Dietmar Pohl, and I have a Mike and an Alpha from him. Nevertheless, this is the knife that I carry almost every day. The basics of this knife are fantastic. Axis assist is everything you could ask for in this kind of knife and a joy to use. The blade is not only beautiful, but it takes and holds and edge very well. The only downside is the handle. What were they thinking?! The stock Valox scales are a disaster in every way. Not only to they look and feel cheap, but the shape offers very little grip and the plastic gets slippery with use. I looked at this knife several times in a store and was torn between its obvious quality as a cutting instrument and the terrible scales. Then I found that several companies offer aftermarket scales. Salvation. I ordered a set of Jens Anso inspired scales in G-10 and waited for them to arrive before even ordering the knife. The new scales fit perfectly and completely transform this knife. Yes, the new scales cost half as much as the knife, but I still spent less than I did for my Pohl Force Mike. The G-10 is tough and scratch resistant. This is now a knife that can spend time in a pocket with keys, change, and whatever without worry about it getting scratched up. The "Anso" pattern is similar to what Mr. Pohl puts on his own knives and offers a good grip in just about any situation. The rest of the knife remains magnificent. I carry it daily and use it just as much. I'm still giving this knife a 4-star rating, despite the factory scales, because the rest of it is so good. It is worth much more than the asking price. Since I bought my knife, I see that Benchmade has started offering customization options direct from the factory that include G-10 handles in a number of textures. None look as good as what can be found in the aftermarket, but at least it's a start from them.
