BO120546: Applegate-Fairbairn Boot Dagger
Boker

This version is smaller than the original and features a concave back blade. Based on an ancient Japanese spear design, this small and light boot knife is superior in penetration and slashing.

When the retired Colonel Rex Applegate handed Boker the prints and design notes for the famous combat knife bearing his name and that of his partner, British Captain W.E. Fairbairn, Boker vowed to stay true to the genius of the original mode, stringently following the original design specifications, with allowances only for the latest in modern materials. The result is the perfect fusion of form and function: The Applegate-Fairbairn Fighting knife from Boker. Its history is compelling: During WWII, commando instructors Applegate and Fairbairn were both assigned to the OSS, the Office of Strategic Services, where they collaborated to improve the Fairbairn-Sykes commando knife, designed for serious hand to hand combat. Boker's reissue of the Applegate-Fairbairn Fighting knife uses the fiberglass-reinforced Delrin handle, thickened in the center for a sure grip. A lanyard hole adds convenience. The handle meets a short, forward bending cross guard that protects the fingers. Boker achieved the knife's preferred rearward balance by inserting lead weights into the handle--a beautifully ergonomic design. (KnifeCenter Note: The handles can be taken apart easily to access the lead weights which are removable). Struck of Solingen 440C stainless steel hardened to a Rockwell 58, the blade has the signatures of Rex Applegate and W.E. Fairbairn etched into the bead-blasted finish. Overall length 9" (22.8 cm.) Blade 4.75" (12.3 cm.) Weight 5.9 oz. (170 g.). Made in Germany.

Pros: Materials, Handle Material, Blade Material, Finish, Weight, Overall Quality, Blade Sharpness
Cons: Sheath/Scabbard, None
Very high quality and useful knife.
Unfortunately, the advertising pictures only show the engraved/spined side of the blade and buyers recoil in horror upon finding the reverse side hollow ground with no apparent edge.In truth,it Is sharpened on both sides. I had the same reaction after ordering the and reading reviews. Contrary to some reports this one arrived sharp -would shave arm hair and the edge is useful for slicing and the general run of non Combat ! knife chores.440c blades tend toward a more polished edge and the sharpness does not become apparent until you shave or actually cut something with it. At least one Cold Steel boot knife has the same odd ball half and half blade which may be practical. The spine side provides strength while the concave side keeps the blade narrow for ease of penetration. Flat side down make cutting chores easier than the obverse side with its more abrupt bevel. I would have given the tool a 5 except for the sheath. It appears to be a versatile belt sheath but is not a bit adaptable for wearing inside a boot. A strong boot clip would be a welcome alternative attachment method. The hardware pack had four bases and screws but only two rubber washers. I over-tightened one and had to back it with a steel washer. Since I wanted a three-point attachment, i found a steel lock washer for the third screw set.
