CRK480KKP: K480KKP Shenanigan Z
CRKT

We asked Ken Onion, Hawaiian custom knife maker, designer, inventor and member of the Blade Magazine Hall of Fame, to give us his ideas for a no-nonsense line of sport and work folders. Our goal was to offer great utility and quality in a rugged high-value locking liner folder.

Ken came up with a work knife version featuring an almost indestructible glass filled nylon frame that we call the Shenanigan Z. Even though Ken is known for his assisted opening folders, in this case, the combination of the open-build frame, blade flipper, and lubrous washers and bronze bushings at the pivot allow for fast one hand opening in an exceptional knife. All models feature 3.25" long blades with a classic Ken Onion profile.

There is a modified drop point with a slight recurve and a swedged top edge. The stainless steel liner lock is a strip lock, inset into one handle to save weight. This makes for a knife that is exceptionally strong, lightweight and comfortable.

Shenanigan Z offers our workhorse AUS 8 blade steel in a bead-blast finish, plus a frame of tough, glass filled nylon. This is a rugged, value-priced knife that can be used daily on the job. It is one that will take the worst abuse from impacts, abrasion, and solvents and still look good. The combination of contoured handle, index finger notch and checkered grip pattern make the Shenanigan models very friendly to the hands.

Both models come with a thoughtfully designed custom stainless steel pocket/gear clip with a black corrosion-resistant coating.

Ken Onion isn't playing any tricks here. CRKT is pulling the Shenanigans.

Pros: Blade Material, Overall Quality, Handle Feel, Weight, Handle Material
Cons: None
Nice Flipper
I hadn't looked at this knife is some time, but when it went on sale, I thought I'd go ahead and get one. I do like the steel on this knife, and although I haven't used it extensively, it has held its edge well. It took a little time for the flipper to loosen up, but now it opens with just the slightest amount of wrist action. The blade locks solidly with no sideways movement. I like the size and shape of the handle, and the scales have a nice crosshatch pattern etched in them to aid in a solid grip. The knife fits well in my hand, and I have fairly large hands. I did file the edges of the scales a little on the inside edges to round them, as they created a bit of a hot spot after some use, and now it's very comfortable to hold and use. It's a larger blade than I would use for EDC, but I knew that before I ordered it. It is very light, and may feel cheap to some; it does feel inexpensive, but FAR from cheap. The only downside may be the pocket clip... it's a bit tight and the crosshatch pattern on the scales may abrade the inside of ones pocket, but that's not an unusual thing. All in all, it's a pretty good knife, especially on sale.
