CRM1614T: M16-14T Big Dog
Columbia River

Kit Carson, designer of the M16® Series, became famous for his titanium frame M16 customs. True to Kit's custom design in all details, the production M16T models have been taken a step further with the addition of our exclusive patented* AutoLAWKS™ safety, which automatically turns the folders into virtual fixed blades when the blade is opened and locked.

The handles, which form the open-build frame, are CNC machined from 6AL4V titanium. The result is a better strength-to-weight ratio than steel or aluminum, and an almost indestructible frame. The titanium frame is minimally ceramic bead-blast finished to enhance grip. The single 420J2 stainless steel locking liner with friction grooves provides positive locking.

The blade is AUS 8 stainless steel, chosen for edge retention and durability, in non-reflective fine bead blast finish, with a Combined Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point™ Serrated edge. This steel can handle the most rugged cutting tasks and still be field sharpened.

Of course, it also features the signature "Carson Flipper" extension to the blade, which aids opening and acts as an additional blade guard.

The "Big Dog" M16®-14T is a hefty, full-size working knife with a dual grind modified Tanto-style blade.

One-hand opening and closing is quick and smooth, the result of lubrous washers at the blade pivot. The ambidextrous thumb stud with checkered surface provides instant access in any circumstance. It features a removable stainless steel clothing/gear clip.

Faithful replicas. Premium quality. Precise. Smooth. Amazing value for those who want the ultimate M16. Kit Carson still marvels at how well our production titaniums compare to his customs.

About the Knife Designer
Kit Carson of Vine Grove, Kentucky, is a retired professional soldier, rising to the level of Sergeant Major. He has made knives for 30 years and has been a full-time knifemaker since 1993. He is a voting member of the Knifemakers’ Guild. Kit has been an avid hunter and fisherman for over 40 years, growing up enjoying the woods and trout streams in the mountains of north Georgia. About his philosophy of knife design, he says: “I strive to follow form and function in the knives I design and build. My reputation has been built around solid working knives, both fixed blade and folders. All the time spent outdoors as a young man and the time spent around the world with the Army has strongly influenced the knives I create.” Nothing reflects this approach more than the Carson Design of our M16 series, which is built for function, not to follow fads. This highly successful knife series was named one of the Top 10 Factory Tactical Folders of the Decade by Blade magazine. The M16-14M recently won a comparison test conducted by Germany’s Messer magazine.

Pros: Handle Material, Handle Feel, Weight, Ease of Opening, None
Cons: Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material, Overall Quality
Titanium good, rusty blade not so good.
Much has been made of this knifes general qualities elsewhere so I'll make a few points relevant to my experience. I appreciate the size of the blade, the tanto profile and serrations. However I was disappointed to find the blade was only sharpened on one side. I don't know whether this is standard on this model, as I've yet to see any mention of it, or simply a factory defect. In addition, despite being AUS8 stainless steel (which I've never had issues with before) it frequently shows signs of rust spotting and discoloration. Given, the spots are not large but they occur even when my knife hasn't seen any wet use at all. I can buff them out with extra fine steel wool but the discoloration of the blades blasted finish remains and has left it pretty speckled at this point. I wish CRKT would've offered this in a premium steel such as 154cm which is much more durable and not especially expensive.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Lock Type, Handle Material, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Ease of Opening, Handle Feel, Weight, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material
Cons: None
I'm a Union glazier in NYC and I have used this knife for numerous things , it's strong , dependable and the ease of opening is fantastic. I love the solid feel this knife has. And as far as sharpness goes , it was like a razor when I received it and I still haven't had to sharpen it yet. All I can is this is one helluva knife. Two thumbs from NYC.

HEAVY DUTY KNIFE BUILT TO LAST THE DISTANCE
This is a well thought out knife made to exacting tolerances. Blade grind came razor sharp with excellent penetrating Tanto tip. Blade deploys with the flipper like grease lightening. Pocket clip makes the knife ride low in the jeans making it virtually invisible. Handle has substantial feel in hand with non-slip bead blast finish. Knife feels perfectly balanced in hand. Knife slices through reinforced rubber hose and manila rope with ease. I have used this knife for food prep, camping, and to carve tent pegs out of wood without any problems. Overall it is a well built knife that is easy to use or one for the collector of well built knives.
