CS88DT: 88DT Dragonfly Series O Tanto
Cold Steel

The classic Japanese battle sword in all its incarnations has been celebrated for centuries, not only for its elegant lines and simple beauty, but also for the technique and skill that went into its construction.

Most swords offered today are interpretive copies of antiquities from feudal Japan. They were made for warrior's of small stature who seldom rose above five and a half feet. As skillfully designed as these swords are, they may not be perfectly suited for the twenty first century warrior, who benefited from contemporary advances in childhood nutrition and healthcare and grew up to be a substantially taller, stronger, and more athletic version of his historical counterpart.

As a way of compensating for this size disparity, Cold Steel has created the Dragonfly Series. These swords feature thicker, wider and heavier blades, which mirror our Imperial Series in respect to heat treatment, polish, quality of furnishings, and attention to detail, but with a few departures.

Most noticeable are the distinctive teal-green silk cord-wrap and black samé (ray skin) used on the handles and the black iron furniture that bears the dragonfly motif. Also, the polished blades are more strongly curved than our Imperial blades and terminate in a long "iris leaf" point for maximum cutting and slashing potential. Additionally, these swords come with two protective bags. Includes a blue cotton travel bag and an intricately decorative display bag made from fine heavy silk brocade.

Mark, order finger sharpening stones or any small sharpening stone. Sharpen the blade by laying/ stroking the stone against the flat primary bevel. Use the normal grit progression. This is a very easy way to sharpen zero ground knives/ swords.

Pros: Sheath/Scabbard, Handle Material, None
Cons: Overall Quality, Finish, Blade Material
Don't Purchase the Cold Steel 88DT Dragonfly 15"
The blade was not finished, or their sharpening process is horrible; I mean r-e-a-l-l-y BAD. One portion of the blade near the middle about 15" long, had burrs on it that made me believe that the sharpening process had only been completed on one side and partially completed on the other! It is however, a fine looking Tanto Sword, very handsome. Cold Steel did tell me that I could send it to them for a complimentary sharpening. I'm pretty much homebound after a near death accident. I no longer drive, and a two-way taxi ride to the USPS is about $40.00. I wish there was a machine I could purchase that would produce a razor sharp zero ground saber edge. This item was $539.95. I expect at the very least the high end of a mid grade item from Cold Steel for that price. I'd say, save your money and purchase a REAL sword.

Far Better Than I Expected; top shelf quality, and crafsmanship.
The packaging, and shipping were perfect in every respect. When I pulled the 15" Dragonfly Sword out,I was blown away. It is a wonderful, and delightfully made sword. Everything about this piece speaks of the highest quality for your hard earned dollars. I am retired, and on a very fixed income. BE YE CAREFUL! This is an EXTREMELY SHARP BLADE right out of the box. I put her through the paces, and I am an experienced self defense artist, jujitsu mainly, but I hold a high level of skill with edged instruments. The bags are lovely, and especially the silk bag. The scabbard is very nice and suited perfectly. The detail on the handle is beyond reproach. This would make an over the top gift. The balance is absolutely perfect. I would use this for battle any day. Honestly, it is built like the proverbial tank, and for the money, unbeatable. I highly recommend this item. Knife Center provided IMMEDIATE shipping!
