Cold Steel
The best of the world's sword fighters have known a simple truth for ages... if you want to become a reasonably good sword fighter you should endeavor to learn sword fighting techniques, footwork and the basic stances. However, if you want to be a master at sword fighting you have to eventually start fighting with a "live blade". If your ultimate goal is to wield a razor sharp sword safely and effectively, you need to train with a sword that approximates the size, feel and heft of a live blade, yet minimizes the possibility of causing grievous, permanent, or life-threatening injury to yourself or your training partner.

This concept was implemented by the ancient Romans, who used dull wooden swords to train their Gladiators and soldiers. And Japanese Samurai used a wooden training sword that was called a Bokken. It's an elegant solution to a vexing problem and effective enough to still be used today. The only problem is that a wooden sword can rot, crack, chip or splinter and eventually become useless.

Cold Steel's solution to these dilemmas was to design a synthetic substitute, low in price and impervious to the elements. The Cold Steel line of Training Swords are made of heaviest grade polypropylene available and closely duplicate a real sword in length, size, weight and feel. While they're not quite as rigid as wood, they have the winning advantages of being virtually unbreakable, remarkably stiff and cut resistant.

Good but not indestructable
I had heard about these training swords for a while before I finally bought one & while I did notice how strong it was, it still didn't last all that long. I had been training with it by hitting a post hard for about 3 months before the blade snapped off at the handle. So note before you buy, these swords can't handle every object it hits. I also didn't really like the handle texture, I felt it was uncomfortable & would slip out of my hands as I got sweaty.

Another Quality Cold Steel Product
I teach military history so I was delighted when my 10 year old asked for a Gladius for Christmas. He's heard me talk about the Centuria, the tesutdo and the manipular formations as well superiority of the Roman soldier in their day.Since he has 2 older brothers, a suspected that an edged gladius might not be a good idea so Cold Steel's training sword hit the mark. I've had the chance to swing real gladii from the height of Rome's power and while the weight of this trainer is off, the balance, shape and length are spot on. This is an ideal trainer for any serious martial artist or toy worth playing with if you're into that (ideal age group 8-12 and 45-60 year olds). Ideal for a martial artist, durable enough for full sword on sword or shield contact (I made him a plywood scaled down shield). He's had a blast with this thing and even chased his older brothers off a couple of time (a trained swordsman could easily break limbs with this thing)He's getting a hand and a half version for his birthday - I highly recommend this as a get him off the computer and out of the house present
