CS97MKM: 97MKM Magnum Kukri Machete
Cold Steel

If you were suddenly castaway on a desert island or stranded in the wilderness or a jungle, what's the one tool you would want at your side? The answer is a good machete. You see the machete, over the last three centuries, has proven to be the ultimate outdoor and survival tool. It will cut, chop, slash, hack, split, scrape, scoop, hammer, dig, crush, carve, whittle, crack or smash just about anything you can put in front of it. The machete also makes a deadly improvised weapon. It can be used to kill both fish and game and will gut, scale, filet, skin, quarter, and butcher them for the table as well. And when you look at its meager cost, it's got to be one of the best bargains for hard earned cash in the world. In fact it's so cheap and useful that even the poorest peasant in South America or tribesman in Africa invariably owns one and counts on it as one of his most precious possessions.

These blades are made out of 1055 Carbon Steel with a tough spring temper and are surfaced with a black, baked-on anti-rust finish. Each Cold Steel® machete comes with a good utility edge which, with just a little work, can be made hair shaving sharp. The tough, Polypropylene handles of our machetes are designed to provide a comfortable secure grip, and they are rugged enough to resist chipping, cracking or breaking, so they last practically forever.

There's no single edged weapon that we can think of that can out-chop or out-cut a good Kukri. It's true that the best Kukris, like our LTC and Gurkha models, can be somewhat expensive. While those "thoroughbreds" perform extraordinarily well for the money that they cost, it sometimes seems that what's required is a good, inexpensive, "workhorse" model. Our Kukri Machetes are those workhorses. They are available in two sizes, one has a thirteen inch blade and the other, our new "Magnum" model has a whopping seventeen inch blade. Both are ready to plow through the toughest chores life can dish out. Each features the distinctive weight-forward balance of our "top-of-the-line" models, and always present their edge on an angle so they're guaranteed to "bite" deep with every stroke. Additionally, they come complete with a sturdy Cordura sheath! They're a solid value, ready for long, hard work.

Pros: Materials, Weight, None
Cons: Blade Sharpness, Finish
Initial Sharpness, Work put in.
I have to say that it is a good blade...Once you put work into it. Most knife selling websites I have seen send in a piece of metal with a wedge where the edge is meant to be. I got one that had been dulled for lawsuit purposes. What I mean is in the case it some how comes through the sheath, wrapping, and box and manages to cut some one open they can't get sued. Now on to what I have done so far. I have re ground the edge, filed it, sanded it, sharpened it, re ground it again, and it is now sitting waiting for a new test run. It is far from done but it is getting there. The baked on coat just ruins the edge as well. I had to re do the edge angle because it was not suitable for chopping at what it was. What I am saying is don't buy unless you are willing to work on the edge. If you are not willing to work on the edge don't buy it. I am not dissing the product or idea of the product just the initial sharpness and finish really.

Would buy again and again
The blade is a christmas gift for enthuesiast. She's going to love it, from the weight/balance, the size (which was bigger than expected, but not bad!), to the already sharpness. I'll be looking again on cyber monday

Kukri machete
I have a Cold Steel Kukri about 16-17 years and it is one of my favorite tools. I've ordered the Kukri Machete because the good experience with my ''old'' Kukri but when l got it l was kinda' disappointed. The finish does not look professional at all, looks like someone made it in a hurry. The black coating is coming off and practically haven't used it, chopped off few tin branches. The edge looks unfinished, very rough and not symmetrical. The handle is the same mold like my old one but missing the brass grommet, l know that's only cosmetic but it's makes the handle look cheap unfinished. Judging by the appearance l would rate it low but l hope it will turn out a very useful tool and for a machete that's what counts. Alex
