GATCO Sharpeners

GATCO makes it easy for anyone to achieve professional results in sharpening knives, tools and more. GATCO's unique system holds the knife blade secure, while the adjustable sliding guide rod positions the hone to provide consistent precision honing action every time.

The person who demands the highest performance in a sharpening instrument demands diamonds. Diamonds, among the hardest cutting media known, can cut quickly and easily through the hardest steel. These properties provide the discerning customer with a sharpening instrument that will outperform any other type of abrasive media.

A sharpening system sharpens all plain and serrated blades with the highest performance in sharpening instruments. GATCO sharpening hones feature longer, wider stones than competitive models.

GATCO sharpening hones with longer, wider stones than competitive models are ergonomically designed to reduce hand, wrist, and arm fatigue. Safety rails protect finger tips.

Excellent kit
So far I have brought a few old kitchen knives back to life in addition to saving a 10+ years old Spyderco Military with a really dull edge. Setting a new edge and making it razor sharp was a cakewalk.

First Time GATCO user
I was on the verge of buying a set of traditional sharpening stones (primarily for my kitchen and utility knives), when I read several reviews from other users who tried the GATCO system. Overall, I would agree with their general sentiments that the product does a pretty good job of taking out the 'user error' most common to those who only sharpen knives infrequently - primarily how to maintain the proper bevel edge when sharpening...and do it consistentlly. That being said, there are a couple of 'distractions' from using this system - primarily the mess of the sharpening oil used..and (more importantly) the odd balancing act one has with larger and heavier blades. Although the blade is clamped to the angle jig, the user then has to balance this odd knife-jig contraption with one hand while trying to carefully lap-file with the other. In some cases, especially trying to flip the mechanism over and over (to get both sides of the blade), the odd off-balance of a heavy-handle blade was squirrely at best (and probably unsafe if not done carefully and very slowly). Still, the unit did what I needed. I took my time (about 5-10 min per knife) and ended up with a set of kitchen knives that originally couldn't cut wet cardboard and ended up with some very sharp utensils. For those wanting to go beyond "utility cutting" and closer to razor/surgical precision, you will need finer stones and a good strop, but for most uses around the house, the GATCO works fine. Also will give a shout-out to for their customer service. When my GATCO unit arrived, the plastic box had received considerable fracturing in transit, but KnifeCenter replaced the box immediately - even calling me personally to follow up. I appreciated that!

GATCO diamond sharpening system
This product is easy to use, quickly sharpens knives and is easy to take a part. It is a little messy with the oil used but some paper under the sharpener takes care of that problem. Does a great job on most knives but some smaller blades can be a little difficult. I will give this system an A-.
