Description
GB05780: Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder
Gerber

Colonel Rex Applegate, with over 40 years of knife design experience, is legendary in the world of hand-to-hand combat. The Applegate-Fairbairn family of knives rank as lasting symbols of the Colonel's dedication, expertise, and sense of purpose, earning international status as best-of-class amongst folding tactical knives. Based on the classic Applegate-Fairbairn fixed knife, the Combat Folder functions comparably to a full-sized fixed blade knife, with the versatility of a folder. The Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder, like all of our military products, is built in Portland, Oregon, USA.

CLASSIC TACTICAL FOLDER FOR MODERN USE
A totally relevant knife for today's deployed military, the Combat Folder's powerful design is highly adaptive for storage due to its being a folding knife, while the blade, when extended, provides the same strength as a fixed blade knife. The patented blade lock lever, a secondary manual locking system, can be flipped into place with the thumb as it presses into the hilt of the handle, preventing the open blade from closing on the hand of the operator, and allowing for absolute confidence in its use. Clip the folder to MOLLE-equipped gear, slide it into a pocket, suspend it from a belt; this knife can accompany its operator through any conflict.

PERFECTLY BALANCED PERFORMANCE
With a 4-1/2 inch double bevel partially serrated blade, the Combat Folder is an elegant close-quarter conflict knife. Dual thumb studs are present for easy one-hand opening of the blade. Featuring a sturdy grooved handle, and etched with the Applegate and Fairbairn signatures on the blade's face, the Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder looks and feels as impressively balanced and sturdy as its name suggests.

Carried Several For Years In The Military And L/E
I have a limited release model and several of the basic models. First thing we did in one of my units was sharpen the top edge to make a true folding dagger. If only Gerber would put some more carbon in the steel, you could get a REALLY razor edge. I've carried them deeply concealed clipped inside the BDUs and ready clipped inside a pocket. They have come in handy, and instinctively become a combat knife in crisis. My only other gripe-you best use something like Loc-Tite Gel to top the grip panel screws! THEY WILL WORK THEIR WAY OUT AND BE LOST! Why Gerber has failed to fix this is beyond me! I even have a #0045 of 1500 that is missing a panel screw. Try tightening them in harder on your own and find you now have a permanent fixed blade! The screws are soft, so when you try lossening them, they tend to strip. So, I go with the superglue. Back to the positive, you have a very fast folding dagger, capable of slashing, stabbing and handling like a fixed Applegate-Fairbairn in a flash. I see them as a combat knife and carry other knives as my utility use. I carry the Gerber and the lesser known Kel Tec folder as my utility most often. The Kel Tec is basically a folding version of the mil issue pilot's knife.

Pros: Overall Quality, Lock Type, Ease of Opening, Blade Material, Handle Material, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Sharpness, Weight, Sheath, Handle Feel, Pocket Clip
Cons: None
Great balance, easy open & close
I ordered this Applegate to replace one I bought 20 years ago and subsequently lost in Iraq or Kuwait. Not much has changed. Although the sheath looks the same, the older one could be carried horizontally on a belt, which I preferred. The handle has a great feel and the blade is sharp, but difficult to sharpen. At least the old one was. The new one may be different, I haven't used it enough to tell.
